EMPIRE MAILS

THE NEW ZEALAND PORTION. United Press Association—By Electric Tel egraph —Copyrigh t SYDNEY, February 6. The outward bound air mail closed at Sydney last night. No specially sealed air mail for London was received by two mail steamers from New Zealand yesterday. Inquiries have been made in New Zealand, but thus far no reply has been received. NEW ZEALAND SERVICE POSSIBLE CONNECTION IN AUSTRALIA By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, February 6. Officials of the General Post Office this afternoon communicated with Sydney postal officials by radio telephone in regard to the statement today that no specially sealed air mail for London was received by the two last mail boats from New Zealand. The Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department states that earlier advice from Sydney was to the effect that the air mail would depart from Sydney at 7 p.m. on Monday. The information received by radio telephone, however, was that the aeroplane left Cootamunda at 5.30 a.m, to-day. As the Post Office had not expected that the two vessels could connect with the air service, it had not announced the service in respect of those sailings and consequently there was very little correspondence for despatch by air mail.

The New Zealand Post Office further inquired concerning the matter by cable and to-night received the following cabled reply from the Sydney Post Office: “In reply to your cable to-day, commencing this week the use of fast aeroplanes between Brisbane and Darwin will permit of adherence to the original timetable. The outward mail will close at Sydney at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays and the inward mail will arrive at 6 a.m. on Fridays.”
