LARGE INCREASE LAST YEAR BRITAIN’S SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTION United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received February 6, 7.25 p.m.) LONDON, February 5. A notable increase is announced in 1934 shipbuilding, and the vessels launched were nearly double those of 1933, states Lloyd’s annual returns. In all 536 vessels were launched in the world, totalling 967,419 tons, the leading countries being:— Tons Britain and Ireland .. .. 459,877 Japan 152,420 Germany 73,733 Denmark 61729 Sweden 49,542 Holland 46,905 The increase in the world output amounts to 478,403 tons, or 97.8 percent., of which the British increase is 326,762 tons. The British output represents 47.5 of the total world output, compared with 27.2 per cent, in 1933. Steamers launched throughout the world represented 391,176 tons, motor ships 563,601 tons, and oil tankers 198,337 tons.
