REPAIRS TO CABLE
BREAK NEAR NORFOLK ISLAND After repairing a break in the Auck-land-Norfolk Island portion of the Pacific cable, the cable steamer Recorder returned to Auckland this week. The repair work occupied four days, and was carried out in fine weather, which continued during the 11 days the vessel was absent from Auckland. The damaged part of the cable was situated nearly 40 miles from Norfolk Island, where the depth of water was about 500 fathoms. It was an old portion of the cable, which is thought to have been broken by a submarine disturbance last December. After both ends of the broken portion had been lifted from the bottom of the sea and buoyed the gap between the two ends was connected with about 11 miles of new cable. When the work was completed the repaired cable was lowered to the bottom of the sea. The cable mooring buoys were then taken on board before the vessel ieft for Auckland. During the Recorder's stay in the locality shark fishing was indulged in by those not engaged in the cable work and several large fish were caught.
