Tasman Record Holder. Another speedy trip from Auckland to Sydney ended when the liner Mariposa, holder of the trans-Tasman speed record for ships, arrived two days sixteen hours after leaving Auckland on Friday. Her record, made in March this year, is two days eleven hours forty minutes, with an average speed of 21.41 knots. With a large list of passengers from America and Island ports and a further 160 from Auckland, the Mariposa sailed from Prince’s wharf at 5.30 on Friday afternoon, arriving in Sydney at 7.30 a.m. on Monday, Australian time, or 9.30 a.m. New Zealand time. The trip was therefore made at an average speed of nearly twenty-one knots between pilot and pilot. This vessel and her sister ship Monterey usually spend about three days on the journey between Auckland and Sydney. The Mariposa’s record was made when she left Auckland at 5 p.c. on Friday, March 23, and arrived in Sydney at 4 a.m. the following Monday. Even this performance was not made at full speed, as the two white liners are designed for a speed of approximately 25 knots. Ruahine Due Next Week. The New Zealand Shipping Co. has received a radio message that the Ruahine, which sailed from London on October 4, is expected to arrive at Wellington at 7 a.m. on November 14, where passengers will disembark.
