REVERSIBLE UPHOLSTERY
TWO-SEASON SUITES One of the cleverest devices for treating an upholstered couch that has loose cushions at the back and on the seat is to be seen in the showroom of an exclusive London dressmaker's shop. The material chosen is an “off white” or pale putty shade of honeycomb linen. It is deeply pitted in squares that get their effect by being woven in alternate directions on one side of the slab-like cushions and for the arms and back of the couch and the accompanying armchairs; the other sides and the narrow joining pieces are of fur cloth in precisely the same shade. In warm weather this fur-cloth side is undermost, so that the velvety pile shows only at the edges, giving a sort of frame to the cooler material that suits well with summer frocks. But for cold weather, or chilly mornings and evenings, the fur-cloth sides are uppermost, and so offer a welcoming warmth to visitors. Such a welcome would be particularly charming to people in evening dress arriving at a winter night party. Hostesses might do well to note the idea when recovering their drawing room furniture. It could be adopted equally well for ordinary cushions, and, of course, in any shade suitable for the colour scheme of a given room.
