WHALERS’ MISFORTUNE
HARPOONER INJURED IN BOMB EXPLOSION By Telegraph—Press Association BLENHEIM, November 9. A Tory Channel whaling party harpooned a huge right whale from the speed launch Cachelot and the mammal sounded but came up under the launch, throwing the craft high in che air and starting a couple of planks, while the shock exploded a spare bomb in the launch. Joseph Perano, leader of the party, who was operating the harpoon gun right over the bombs, was severely injured, a large part of his thigh and back muscles being torn away. The harpoon line was hurriedly severed, and the launch, which was in a sinking condition, made full speed for the beach, which was reached in the nick of time. Perano was removed to the Picton Hospital, where he was operated on. His condition is serious, but not grave. The other occupants of the launch are believed to have sustained minor injuries, but details are meagre.
