MEETING OF DRUIDS’ LODGE DISTRICT OFFICERS PRESENT At its fortnightly meeting, the Lily of Temuka Druids Lodge was honoured by a visit from the Grand President, Bro. L. B. Freeman, and Grand Lodge officers. A.D. Bro. A. R. Davidson presided and there was a large attendance of local members, as well as District President, Sister R. J. Crum, and P.G. Bro. F. Chittock, Arch Druid of the Timaru Lodge, and members. Three members were reported sick, and the Bards reported that they were making satisfactory progress. After the general business concluded the Grand President gave a brief outline of the work carried out by the Board of Management during the year. The main business had been a complete revision of the rules, and the inclusion of a new rule in respect to a member's second wife and a deceased member’s widow. The Grand Secretary mentioned in his remarks the manner in which the Lodge and Order in general had shown a satisfactory increase in the various funds. He congratulated the Lodge on being a surplus lodge at the 1930 quinquennial valuations, although having been in existence only eight years. The sick pay was very light in Temuka, only averaging £1 a member. Although - the Canterbury jurisdiction had lost about 500 members during the last three years, it was pleasing to note that for the three quarters of this year a net increase of 64 was shown. Other speakers were Grand Treasurer Bro. J. T. Collins, a foundation memI ber of the Temuka Lodge, Grand Guard Bro. G. McKenzie, and P.G.P.’s Bros. C. Barnes and F. Chittock. The District President, in her remarks, congratulated the Lodge on having its first official visit of Grand Lodge for several years. After the Lodge closed, supper was served and the Grand Lodge officers left for Christchurch. The fortnightly meeting of the Oak Leaf Juvenile Lodge was held on Thursday evening, the Grand Lodge officers of Canterbury being present. A.D. Bro. G. Benbow presided over an attendance of 41 members. The Grand President said it was a revelation to him to see such a large muster of boys, and he congratulated them on their good behaviour. He hoped they would continue to take a keen interest in Druidism and when they became older they would be willing to join the adult Lodge. The following toast list was honoured: “The King,” “Grand Lodge of Canterbury,” and “The Visitors.” District President Sister R. J. Crum, P.G.P. Bro. F. Chittock. A.D. Bro. Lambourne and P.A. Bro. Kilgour, of the Acorn Juvenile Lodge, all spoke in reply. RATANA CELEBRATION Followers of Ratana, the Maori < leader, celebrated the fifteenth anniversary of the foundation of the move- 1 ment at Arowhenua Pa on Thursday. < In the morning a service was conducted I in the hall by the local Ratana pastor, i the Rev. TENNIS A team from the Temuka PresbyI terian Club visited Seadown on Thursday for a friendly match with the local club. SALVATION ARMY Soldiers and friends of the Temuka Salvation Army Corps attended a welcome to the newly appointed officers, Captains J. Gould and O. Ingerson in the Citadel on Thursday evening. Sergeant-Major E. Butler presided. Addresses of welcome were given by | Bandmaster S. Shepherd, Ensign Pinnell, of the Bramwell Booth Home; Mrs S. Shepherd, from the Young People; and the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan), on behalf of the citizens, while Captain Moore, of Geraldine also I spoke. j Captain Gould thanked the speakers for their kindly welcome and said she hoped that she and Captain Ingerson would be able to assist the Corps forward. They had come prepared to try, and she felt sure that the officers and soldiers would do their utmost to assist them.

WAITEA REBEKAH LODGE i Sister Hutcheson, N.G., presided at | the fortnightly meeting of the Waitea Rebekah Lodge. A motion of sympathy with Sister Ludemann and Bros. A Young and H. Harrison was passed. Two new candidates were initiated into the Rebekah Degree. The following committees were appointed:—Social: Sisters Young, T, Goodman, M. Templeton, Hutcheson and M. Scott. Sick and Visiting: Sisters Hutcheson, Goodman and Young. The auditors were re-elected and Sister Young was appointed Prompter and Sister M. Scott press steward. After the Lodge closed the outgoing social committee entertained members. Competitions were won by Sisters Pulford, Ives, Wood and Templeton, and Bros A. Young and Johnston. GENERAL NEWS Fifty-three Temuka people took advantage of the excursion train to Christchurch yesterday to visit the Metropolitan Show. The number was slightly lower than the average of recent years. The team to represent the Temuka Ladies’ Bowling Club in a match against Timaru at Temuka on Tuesday next is Mesdames E. Blackmore, M. Andrews, W. J. Shand and J. Davis (s); Mesdames E. B. Cooper, A. D. Cameron, A. C. Palmer and W. L.

Harrison (s); Mesdames G. Fletcher, and T. Winter, Miss E. McGarva and Mrs F. A. Joynt (s). The formation of an amateur atoletic club in Temuka is being consid\red by some young men. They are to start training shortly, and hope to be able to take part in the South Canterbury Athletic Club’s evening competitions at Timaru. Complimentary reference to the attractions of Temuka with especial praise for the Domain, was made by members of the U.A.O.D. Grand Lodge in the course of their addresses at a reception given by the Lily of Temuka Lodge on Thursday evening. They said that they had spent part of the afternoon in the Domain, and were of the opinion that it was among the finest in New Zealand.

Gillum, B. Connolly, P. Gilmore and , T. Dwan. PERSONAL Mr A. W. Gutteridge left Temuka . yesterday to take up a position in Wellington. Mr L. H. Wightman left on Thursday for Wellington. Mr R. Lamb, Leeston, is visiting Temuka for the week-end. “THE KING’S VACATION” George Arliss is an artist of whom it can be written that all his pictures are first-class entertainment. In “The King’s Vacation,” screening at Temuka to-day, he gives a superlative performance, it rates first class on all counts. There is real enjoyment in watching Arliss work in any film, but the interest is further enhanced by the fact that his characterisation of a deposed king, of humorous mein and slightly romantic outlook, is refreshingly new'. The supporting programme is excellent, consisting of several fine featurettes, including Sports Thrills, Travelogue, “Bethlehem to Jerusalem,” a musical number, Cartoon and Comedy. NOTES Ex-pupils of the St. Joseph’s Convent School and friends of the Sisters of St. Joseph are invited to attend the Solemn Blessing and Dedication of the Jubilee Chapel to-morrow at 3 p.m. by Bishop Brodie. The Temuka Returned Soldiers’ Association requests all returned men and South African Veterans to attend the Anzac Day parade at the War Memorial at 11 a.m. to-morrow and afterwards at the Presbyterian Church. The Temuka Plunket Society will hold its annual shop day on Tuesday, and donations of cakes and produce will be gratefully received.. The Waitohi Plat Tennis Club will hold a meeting in the Library on Monday at 8 p.m. Simes’s Shoe Store advertises that it is definitely closing shortly and that these are the last few days of bargains. - An invitation to citizens to attend the Armistice Day service in the Domain is extended by the Temuka Borough Council, which also requests citizens to observe two minutes’ silence from 11 a.m. The Council also advises that the annual clean-up week will commence on the West Side of the borough on November 12 and that all rubbish placed on the footpath or near boundaries will be collected. The Temuka Pipe Band advises that it will play selections in the Pleasant Point township this evening. The Clandeboye Tennis Club will hold a dance in the Clandeboye Public Hall on Thursday, November 15.
