Mr George Landsbury, Leader of the Labour Party, in a speech at Gatford said: “I do not intend to ask men serving in the forces to break their oath, but I do ask every mother, sister and sweetheart to do their utmost to keep male relatives and friends out of the Services. If the supply of men willing’ to fight is cut off, there cannot be any more war.”
