TIMARU MAIN SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the Timaru Main School Committee, Mr A. T. Lund presided in the absence of Mr J. W. Preen. The headmaster, Mr W. W. Garton, reported that during the past month, six boys and seven girls were admitted, and two boys and five girls had left, leaving the roll at 266 boys and 272 girls. The attendance had been good, the average daily for the past four weeks being 509.5, 512.5, 506 and 507. Miss Brownlee, physical drill expert, attended the school, and discussed drill with individual members of the staff. The first portion of the proficiency examination was taken this week, and will be completed on December 4. A circular lettc -eceived from the Town Clerk with regard to the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in January, asking for particulars of the number of children likely to be present. The secretary was instructed to write the authorities reserving space for 250 children, to be under the care of the committeemen, Messrs Gribbin and A. T. Lund, the visitors for the past month, reported that in some of the rooms the plaster was in a bad state, being cracked and dangerous. Otherwise all was in excellent condition. The secretary was instructed to
write to the Education Board requesting that the matter of the ceilings should be investigated. Votes of thanks were passed to the Borough Council for the milk supplied during the winter, and to Messrs Gould and Co. for cartage of maypoles.
