ATHLETICS

SOUTH CANTERBURY CLUB PROSPECTS BRIGHT There appears to be a prospect of much greater interest in and support for amateur athletics during the coming season, stated the report which was presented at the annual meeting of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club last night, when Mr E. D. Mcßae presided over an attendance of 15 members. It was understood that various bodies were endeavouring to organise new sections which, it was hoped, would affiliate with the club. In view of this, it had been suggested that weekly intersectional meetings should be held on the lines of the competitions held by the Canterbury Centre. This matter would come up for discussion later, and the committee hoped that it would be carefully considered, and felt certain that any movement towards increased interest in amateur athletics would have the cordial support of the members of the club. The evening sports meetings were well supported by the competitors, and interest was well maintained throughout.

Some excellent performances were registered in distance running by H J. Eaton, while in jumping events T. C. Morrison performed excellently. These two athletes were chosen to represent Canterbury at the inter-provincial meeting with Otago at Oamaru. The Wallace Cun for the most points during the season was won by N. Ford, and the Mcßae Cup for the runner-up in this competition by H. J. Eaton The latter competitor, having won the Mcßae Cup three times, the committee decided that it should now remain in his possession and another cup had been presented for future competition The system of awarding miniature cups on a points basis in place of buttons, which was inaugurated last season, proved satisfactory to all concerned. During the season the club held seven evening meetings, most of which resulted in a small financial loss, though otherwise they were well conducted and satisfactorily supported. At the beginning of the season the Club’s finances were at a low ebb. as although cash-in-hand totalled £3 8 1. the accounts outstanding left a small debit balance. It was pleasing to be able to report a substantial improvement in this direction, and after payment of outstanding accounts, there was now a credit balance of £7 8 1. It was regretted that subscriptions of active members amounting to £5/2 6, j were still outstanding, and the committee would suggest that the question of subscriptions and the collection of same should be reviewed at an early date. Trophy orders amounting to £2 remained to be issued, but subscriptions amounting to £2/15/- had to be paid by the prize-winners before these trophies could be collected. Departures from the district had resulted in the loss to the club of several outstanding members, including Messrs H. J. Eaton. J. Hardy, and Rex. Metson. The loss of these members would be severely felt, but it was hoped that their abilities would not be lost to amateur athletics in their new sphere. The club was fortunate in having the assistance of an enthusiastic band of officials. The committee wished to express its deep appreciation of the work of those gentlemen at the evening sports meetings, and in helping to transport athletes to various meetings, and to those office-bearers who assisted financially. Thanks were also due to the authorities concerned for the use of the Boys’ High School grounds for evening meetings. These facilities were greatly appreciated. The assistance of the local newspapers, which had at all times published full reports of the Club’s activities was also gratefully acknowledged. An amount of approximately £5 was raised by an enthusiastic sub-commit-tee headed by Mr A. Harper by the sale of donation tickets, and this accounted in no small measure for the success of the season. In conclusion the committee expressed its thanks for the cordial support accorded by the members during the season, and in expressing the view that the time had now arrived for a forward move in amateur athletics in South Canterbury, ! sincerely trusted that the Club would become ever more flourishing. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president expressed his thanks to the committee for the support it had given him during the year and for its efforts on the club’s behalf. A feature of the year’s activities had been the pleasant relations which had existed with the Waimate Club, meetings having been exchanged, which had been most enjoyable. Prospects seemed good and the stage appeared to be set for a successful season. The motion was seconded by Mr J. D. Fraser and carried without discussion. Election of Officers. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr C. R. Orr-Walker. S.M.; president, Mr E. C. J. Foot; vicepresidents, Brother Marcellin, Messrs A. Jackson, J. A. Norrie, A. Hay. A. Malcolm. F. L. N. J. Suckling. t A sectional system of athletic meet- ] ings adopted by the Canterbury t Centre was explained by Mr A. Ander- , son. who said that the basis of the t whole system was team spirit. He e suggested ways by which a number of e small sections could be organised to x compete against each other. £ Mr Cameron commended the pro- j posal to the meeting and it was referr- r ed to the executive for favourable t consideration. l

On the motion of Mr Harper the subscriptions were fixed at 4/- for seniors and 2/- for juniors under 19 years. It was decided to recommend to the executive that the first evening meeting be held on the first Thursday in November. Mr Cameron said that the Caledonian Society was holding a jubilee meeting on New Year’s Day, and he suggested that the Canterbury Centre be asked to send down a strong team of amateur athletes.

It was agreed to follow up Mr Cam eron’s suggestion.
