WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
CAVE At the October meeting of the Cave Women’s Institute there was a good attendance of members and visitors, and all were welcomed by the president, Miss Amyes. Mesdames Wisely and Squire were appointed to attend the half yearly conference at Temuka. Arrangements for a concert and dance to be held in November were completed. Motions of sympathy were passed to Mrs Sams and Mr Kelynack. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses.
Miss Riddle gave a very interesting and entertaining talk about her travels through Java, and showed a beautiful collection of souvenirs. She was accorded a vote of thanks.
Mrs J. Little was the winner of the quarters’ competitions,and the monthly competition winners were: Bowl of flowering shrubs, Miss Weavers 1. Mrs W. Little 2, Miss Wisely 3. Bowl of narcissi, Mrs W. Little 1. Mrs M. Master 2, Mrs Malthus 3. Chocolate cake. Miss Wisely 1, Mrs W. Little 2, Mrs Brown 3. Mt. NESSING. At the October meeting of the Mt. Nessing Women’s Institute. Mrs R. Irving presided over a good attendance of members and visitors. One new member was elected. Mrs W. C. Brown and Mrs A. Irving were appointed delegates to attend the half-yearly meeting of the South Canterbury Federation. Each member brought eggs for the Central Relief Society in Timaru and Mrs Irving spoke of the great work being done by the Relief Committee and urged members to support it. Mrs Irving introduced Sister Adams of Timaru who gave a talk on “homenursing.” On the motion of Mrs Glass she was accorded a vote of thanks. Sister Adams, Mrs Black and Miss Begg acted as judges in the competitions. Results were: Polyanthus, Mrs R. Irving 1. 2 and 3. Narcissi, Miss Austin 1 and 2, Miss Ferguson 3. Hyacinths, Mrs W. Simpson 1. Mrs Fisher 2, Mrs Austin 3. Gingerbread, Mrs Glass 1, Mrs J. C. Macaulay 2. Mrs Brown 3. Articles made by the Disabled Soldiers were on sale. The hostesses for the day were Mrs and Miss Austin. Miss K. Fraser acted as pianist. Mrs J. C. Macaulay had charge of the sale table. WASHDYKE. A social and dance was held in the Washdyke Hall last week to celebrate the third birthday of the Washdyke Woman’s Institute. The Pleasant Point, Rosewill and Seadown Institutes were represented. The large gathering spent a most enjoyable evening. Between dances items were given by Mrs Lyne’s pupils. The items were: Minuet, the Misses Lyne; duet, the Hosking Brothers; two recitations, Miss Drew; songs, Mr C. Lane. Mr W. Leslie as a ventriloquist was very popular. The Pleasant Point players presented their one act play, “The Bride.”
The winners of the novelty dances were: Lucky spot. Miss Thora Phillips and Mr Topp; traffic cop. Mrs J. Harris and Mr Seivwright; first couple on floor, Mr and Mrs Taylor. Before lighting the candles on the birthday cake which was made by Li s Burrell and beautifully iced and decorated with the Institute badge and colours by Miss M. Burrell, the president. Miss Eliza Cartwright, welcomed all present, and hoped f hey would spend an enjoyable evening She then called on the youngest member, Miss B. Kellahan, to blow J e
candles out. and Mrs Gaffaney. vic° president, to cut the cake. Miss Lory then presented the president With a bouquet.
After supper Mrs Gaffaney presented the special prizes for most points gained during the year in the competitions as follows: Seniors, Miss Eliza .'artwright 1. Miss Hansen 2, Miss D. Wilson’s prize. Juniors < prizes presented by Mrs W. James and Mrs G. Watt). Miss Edna Cartwright and Miss P. Darling equal 1. Music was supplied by an orchestra, and Mr W. King, Rosewill. was M.C.
