SERIOUS FRAUDS
STATE GOVERNOR CHARGED. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 18, 7.10 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, June 17. A message from Bismarck (North Dakota), states that the Governor, William Langer, and four associates, were convicted of defrauding the United States Government through soliciting campaign funds through the distribution of Federal relief jobs. A message from Fargo North Dakota), on April 18, stated that in the most serious charges of graft and corruption within the Federal Civil Works administration of the State Government, William Langer, a member of the so-called Non-Partisan League, with eight other party leaders, had been indicted in the Federal Court on charges of forcing Civil Works Administration workers to contribute part of their pay to finance political activities, including the publication of a campaign paper. The indictments charged accused with violation of two laws, by coercing Federal employees into making political contributions and thus interfering with an Act of Congress. It was said that Langer for a long period had used similar methods with State employees, but no complaint was made until he spread his activities to Federal workers.
