CROWN TENANTS

FAIRLIE BRANCH WOOL SALE ROSTER DISCUSSED The monthly meeting of the Fairlie branch of the Crown Tenants’ Association was held on Saturday night. Motions of sympathy in their recent bereavements were passed to Messrs D C. Kidd. B. Anniss, W. Waddell and I. Ibbctson. The president (Mr D. Barnes) remarked that the main business for the meeting was to discuss what action could be taken with regard to the altered Timaru wool sale dates. If the main sale was abolished it would mean that additional freight to Christchurch would put another burden on wool growers. It would also mean that the Timaru Harbour Board would receive less due§ and that Timaru would lose prestige. Wool stores in Timaru employed a number of men, and if a wool sale was cut out, much of that employment would be lost. Mr T. Macdonald said that the matter had not yet been brought before the local branch of the Farmers’ Union, but he was sure it would support the Association in any resolution for the continuance of the wool sales. The meeting unanimously decided that the branch delegates to the South Canterbury Executive meeting should have Instructions to strongly support any action that could be taken in the matter. School for Farmers. The president said that he had received a suggestion from Mr Cooper of the Fairlie District High School staff, that a two day school for farmers should be held in Fairlie. If the suggestion was adopted, qualified men from Lincoln College could be invited to give lectures. Failing a farmers’ school, he thought that the Farm Economist at Lincoln College (Dr I. W. Weston) should be invited to address a meeting of farmers. There w r as no doubt that Dr. Weston could acquaint farmers with much useful knowledge of farm economy. In his opinion, a special j effort should be made to take advantage of the knowledge possessed by agricultural specialists Mr E. R. Goulter supported the scheme for holding a farmers’ short school. He said that similar schools in Marlborough, which he had attended, had been very successful. It was decided to support the scheme, and to find out when the school could be held. Part-time Organiser. Mr W. H. Collins moved that the annual subscription should be raised by 5/- for one year in order to appoint Mr C. V/. Markham as a part-time organiser for the Association. The motion was lost, and it was decided to discuss other suggestions with Mr Markham. Mr Alister Mackintosh said that it was possible that Mr Markham would have to sever his connection with the Association. He moved that the branch should put on record its approval of the efficient manner in which Mr Markham had, without any remuneration, carried out the rtupendous task connected with the positions of Provincial and Dominion secretary. A number of members expressed their agreement with the motion, and it was carried unanimously. Certifying Brown Top Seed. Mr F. C. Isitt said that in his opinion the present date for certifying brown top seed (February 28) was absurd. If the date was extended to April 30. he considered that twice as much seed would be certified in the district. It was decided to take the matter up with the proper authorities. Committees Elected. District committees were elected as follows: — Sherwood Downs —Messrs G. W. Armitage, D. Ewart, G Gallagher, and T. Moorhead. Ashwick —Messrs Geo Fraser and J. Ireland. Mackenzie —Mr T. Y. Seay. Burke’s Pass—Messrs A. B. Ross. A. J. Ross and W. Mackintosh. The following delegates to the South Canterbury Executive, were appointed: Messrs D. Barnes, D. C. Kidd, E. R. Goulter, W. Mackintosh W. H. Collins, T. Moorhead, G. Gallagher and Alister Mackintosh. The Cricklewood subbranch was left to appoint its own delegate, and committee members. A motion of thanks was passed to Mr F. W. Compton for auditing the branch’s annual balance sheet. It was agreed that during the winter months, the meetings should commence at 8 p.m.
