STREET DAYS

DECISION HELD OVER PROPOSAL TO REDUCE NUMBER Applications for dates on which to hold street days were before the Borough Council last night, but after a short discussion it was decided to hold the matter over to enable the Works Committee to confer with the South Canterbury Employers’ Association. Organisations applied for dates as follows:—Returned Soldiers’ Association, April 20; Central Relief Society, as soon as possible; St. John Ambulance, May 18; W.C.T.U. (Sailors’ Rest), end of August; District Nurse, August 31; Y.M.C.A. ana Y.W.CA, September; Combined Orphanages, October; Flunket Society, November. The South Canterbury Employers' Association asked that not more than five days be allowed in each year, and that such days be any other day than Friday. The Works Committee recommended that all the applications be granted, but that St. John Ambulance and the W.C.T.U. be allotted a combined day, making the total number of days seven. Cr. P. B. Foote said that while he realised that all the bodies which had applied for street days were deserving, he would like to see the number of days reduced from seven. There was a feeling that street days had a tendency to keep people out of town. He would like to see the applications referred back to the Works Committee for a conference with the South Canterbury Employers’ Association, with the exception of that of the R.S.A., which he considered should be granted. He moved an amendment to the Committee’s report along those lines. Cr. F. B. Hawkey seconded the amendment.

Cr. W. S. Tweedy said he would like to know what was the nature of the Employers’ Association’s representations. All the Council had before it was the bald statement that the Association wished the number of days reduced to five.

Cr. P. C. Vinnell deprecated the fact that street days should be necessary for such organisations to raise funds, and said that he considered all the applicants worthy, and was in favour of them all being granted. After further discussion the amendment was carried.
