PAINTING THE LIPS

A DANGEROUS FREEDOM. Not many years ago to “paint the lips” definitely was “not done” by women of good taste, says an English paper. But now that convention has lifted her ban. and every woman from duchess to kitchenmaid wields this decorative symbol of our modernity, it has become in many hands a dangerous freedom. Take a walk down any busy street and you will see for yourself. You will see women and girls with scarlet gashes across their faces; red mouths quarreling fiercely with the red of the hats worn above them; mouths of which the natural shape has been altered to the destruction of any smiling charm of expression or individual character. When making up the lips, the lipstick should be carefully chosen to suit the individual type; some experimenting is necessary. The fastidious woman often has quite a battery of lip-sticks. For not only must the lipstick be more vivid for evening than for day or for sports wear, but it must tone or contrast with the colour scheme of her outfit.
