TE AWA SCHOOL PICNIC AND SPORTS The annual picnic which concludes the school year at Te Awa. Winchester Sett lenient, was held recently at j Caroline Bay. and was most enjoyable. Conveyance by bus from Te Awa to the bay and back, was much appreciated. and the weather being perfect, there was a large attendance. The opportunity was taken of inspecting the ship Sultan Star, during which many kindly explanations were given. Later a short sports programme was i held, this being due to the generosity | of Mr J. C. South, who gave prizes for | the races and sweets for a scramble. Mr Cross gave ice cream for all pupils, and cheers for these men were given at the call of the chairman, Mr C. Cribb. The races resulted:— Senior boys: Harold South I, Jack Scowen 2, Andrew Archibald 3. Senior girls: Jessie Archibald I, Peggy Cribb 2, Mary Rennie 3. Junior boys: Donald Rennie I, Ronald Archibald 2. Ray Hampton 3. Junior Girls: Margaret Smith 1, Doreen Smith 2, Ivy Norris 3. Boys' three-legged race: Donald Rennie and Tommie Archibald 1. Ray Hampton and Ronald Archibald 2. At the forthcoming New Zealand [ Bowling Championships, at Dunedin, | the Temuka Club will be represented by a rink comprising W. McCallum. A. H. Taylor, Dr. A. S. Mclnnes and T. Edwards (s). Most of these players will be taking part in other events thanthe rinks, but it is unlikely that any other Temuka players will be taking part. The local club championship pairs competition will probably be continued to-day, after a break for the Christmas holidays. A progressive pairs tournament has been arranged for New Year's Day and there will probably be a special attraction for January 2. CALEDONIAN SOCIETY'S DANCE. A most successful Cinderella dane® was given by the Temuka Caledonian Society in the Drill Hall, as a conclusion to its sports meeting, on Tuesday evening. The takings compared more than favourably with those of last year and a most enjoyable programme was conducted. Music was supplied by a local orchestra, extras being played by a piper and Miss M. Lawlor. Mr W. Seeler was the M.C. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs T. Wallace. Christchurch, who have been staying with Mr and Mrs D. Taylor, Hayhurst Street, have returned home. Miss M. Taylor, Nelson, Is staying with her parents, Mr and Mrs J. N. Taylor. Milford, for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Mr and Mrs E. M. Woodhead, of Otahuhu. Auckland, who were married recently, are the guests of Mr and Mrs A. Beattie. Main Road. Temuka Mr L. Butters is spending a holiday with his parents at Rangiora. Miss Merle Warelng is visiting Christchurch on holiday. Mrs A. Hayhurst Is visiting her daughter. Mrs A. C. Fell, Blenheim. Mr and Mrs C. D. Hayhurst. Ashburton. are staying at “Ashfleld.” Temuka, for a short holiday. Mr and Mrs G. Smith have returned to Temuka from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs W. L. Harrison left 1 Temuka on Tuesday t j spend a camp- | ing holiday in the south. I Mr and Mrs J. Bremner and the Misses H and E. Bremner are spending j the holidays in Tlmaru. j Mr R. G. Simpson Is visiting his parents In Christchurch. The Rev. C. L. Mountfort left on Tuesday for a holiday in the north. Mr L. M Dwan, formerly of Temuka, but now of Christchurch, was successful ill passing in Mercantile Law 1, I Bookkeeping 1 and Bankruptcy Law in the recent New Zealand University examinations. The engagement of Eileen Patricia, second daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Dwan, Temuka, to William, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Cassidy. Levels, is announced. GENERAL NEWS Although the rain of the last 24 hours fell rather heavily at times, the showers came at long Intervals and the weather was not as unpleasant for campers and holiday-makers as the recent steady showers would have been. Appreciation of the work of the lady helpers, assisted by the Girl Guides. ir» connection with the recent children's fete, was expressed yesterday by the president of the Temuka Returned Soldiers' Association. At the Temuka Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr A. E Smith. JP, two statutory first offenders for drunkenness were convicted and discharged.
