PLEASANT POINT

THE TOWN BOARD MONTHLY MEETING Commissioners M. Maze (chairman) A. H. Roberts, D. Davison, E. H. Halstead, T. Ilelliher and J. Dossett attended the monthly meeting of the Town Board. An apology was received from Councillor W. Taylor. Arising out of the Health Officer's report, it was decided to serve notices upon residents, who drain on to the streets, that intercepting grease traps would have to be installed. The representative. Main Highways Board, notified that a visit w : ould be paid to the township during January —lt was decided to bring some matters before the Board. In answer to a query from the South Canterbury Highways Traffic Group, it was decided to oppose the Traffic Inspector being appointed as a stock ranger. The opinion was expressed that there was no necessity for the appointment in the township. The treasurer reported that the books showed a credit of £ls/10/-. The clerk was voted one guinea as a Christmas Box. The chairman extended to members the best of wishes for a prosperous new year. It was decided to call applications for the position of dog-tax collector. Sitting as a Domain Board, permission was granted to two applicants to use the Domain for picnics. Seasonal greetings were received, and reciprocated. GALA COMMITTEE. The Gala Committee met in the Town Hall when the treasurer presented a statement of accounts. Mr M. Maze presided and there was a good attendance. It was shown that there would be a credit of approximately £23, after accounts had been paid. The chairman said that this was very satisfactory. The procession had been an outstanding success and reflected credit upon all concerned. The sports programme had been well carried out, while the games committee could take credit for providing an excellent programme of fun. Credit was due to the secretary, Mr D. Gillespie, who had carried out his duties to the satisfaction of everyone. On the motion of the chairman, votes of thanks were passed to Miss Wall, Mr Wotherspoon, Temuka Pipe Band and to all who had assisted with the function. On the motion of Mr Wakefield, who spoke eulogistically of the secretary's services, a donation of two guineas was unanimously passed to him. Donations were also made to the Pipe Band, gatekeepers and copper stewards. Several recommendations were made for next year's function, it being unanimously considered that the event should be an annual one. SCHOOL BREAK-UP. There was a very large attendance of parents and friends, at the annual break-up function, which took the form of a parent's day. Mr W. B. Oborn, presided. Punctually at 1.30 p.m. “Father Christmas” arrived in a decorated car and presented gifts to all pupils of the primer classes. The previous decision of former committees—that no prizes be given—was adhered to. The next item was a mannequin parade by the senior girls when dresses and millinery made entirely by them under the direction of their instructress were displayed. The display was heartily applauded Next followed a “take off” display by the senior boys, dressed in all kinds of fantastic costumes. Folk dances and rhythmic drill displays by the junior and senior girls was followed by a maze march by the whole school.. All these items were well executed and received unstinted applause. Displays of hand work by the various classes elicited great admiration. The chairman heartily thanked the headmaster and staff for the display by the scholars, which did credit to all concerned. He was pleased to see such a large attendance which showed that keen interest was still being taken in the school. The annual report of the inspectors had been an excellent one. Fk'om 15 presented for the proficiency examinations. 14 pupils had gained proficiency certificates and one competency. Altogether, the school had maintained its high standard. Mr McGuigan, headmaster, returned thanks for the suppo: t accorded by the committee and parents. He impressed upon the scholars that examination successes did not mean everything. Good citizenship was the greatest thing In life. Mr Preen, president of the New Zealand School Committees' Association made an appropriate address to the scholars exhorting them to try to emulate the great men of the Empire. He also, as a member of the Canterbury Education Boord. assured the parents that the school held a high place in the esteem of the Board. He paid a tribute to Mr Burnett the donor of the school farm and to the farm school committee. He took It as high honour to be asked to present the certificates, and dux medals won during the year. He congratulated the dux of the primary school, Natalie Smith, and the dux of the secondary school. Dorothy Hullen to whom he presented gold medals. Agricultural awards, presented by The Farmers’ Union were won by Eion Chisholm 1, and James Cartwright 2. in the open class and by Gordon Oed 1, and Basil Simmons 2. in the lower division. Navy League Essay Certificates were won by Tul Cleland 1. and Beattie Taylor and Betty Cartwright equal 2. in Form 1.. and by Natalie Smith 1. and Elsie Wooflindln and Ellen Cleland equal 2, in Form 11. Cups for the Tennis Championship were won by Mary Andrews and Jim I Cartwright. Presentations were made to Miss Reeve, dressmaking Instructress oy Mrs Taylor, and to Mr F. Malcolmson by pupils of Standard IV. Afternoon tea. concluded a very successful function. ACCIDENT. A painful accident was suffered by Peter Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs Alf Johnson, on Saturday afternoon. He was cycling over an intersection on the main road when he collided with a car and was knocked unconscious. He received attention from Dr Benham | and was taken to Timnru Public Hospital. It is understood that he is making satisfactory progress towards j recovery.
