MOTOR OVERTURNS MISHAP AT McCOLL’S HILL Owing to the transmission gear breaking and the brakes failing to hold Mr B. Lafrentz had a serious smash in a half ton truck while coming down McColl’s Hill with a load of full milk cans, when en route to the Pleasant Valley Dairy Factory on Tuesday morning. A youth named W. Payne, who was a passenger, suffered a severe blow on the back of the head, and was conveyed to the Braeslde Private Hospital. Mr Lafrentz escaped uninjured. The road is a steep one and the car got out of control on the descent. Mr Lafrentz did his utmost to keep it under control, but, just as it got to Pearse's corner at the foot of the hill, the right back wheel collapsed, and the truck overturned several times before coming to a standstill. The truck was badly wrecked, and a large quantity of milk was lost, only a few gallons being saved. PERSONAL. Mr K. Logan, Dunedin, is spending Christmas holidays with his parents, Mr and Mrs E. H. Logan, Geraldine. Miss Nalerie Murphy, of Dunedin, is the guest of Mr and Mrs E. H. Logan, Geraldine for the holidays. The engagement is announced of Mr Ken Logan of Dunedin younger son of Mr and Mrs E. H. Logan. Geraldine to Nalerie Boyne, daughter of Mr and the late Mr A. Murphy, of Tainui, Dunedin. Mr and Mrs G. I. Plimmer (Raukapuka), are on a holiday visit to Marlborough Sounds. Messrs G. and J. Lysaght (Ashburton), who have been the guests of Mrs M. Lysaght (Coach Road) have returned home. Mr Theo Williams (Christchurch), is visiting Geraldine. Mrs B. Donovan (Christchurch), is the guest of Mrs L. P. Scott, Raukapuka. Mr and Mrs F. Charles (Kakahu), are on a visit to Auckland. Mrs R. Algoe and family of Auckland are the guests of Mrs J. H. Lewis, Talbot Street. Mr J. S. Clyne has returned from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs R. Reeves and the Misses Reeves (Dunedin), are spending a fortnight with Mr and Mrs A. Toomey, “Grey Terrace,’’ Hilton. VARIABLE WEATHER, Steady rain set in during the early morning yesterday and continued practically without intermission till mid-day. The rain eased during the afternoon, but conditions remained dull and cold, with a fresh southerly wind. “A BEDTIME STORY.” The inimitable Maurice Chevalier, in the latest Paramount picture, “A Bedtime Story,” will head the programme at the Municipal Theatre this evening. Chevalier is cast as a man-about-town who suddenly discovers that home and fireside have their charms, when he finds a baby (Baby Leroy) abandoned in his car. Helen Twelvetrees a beautiful actress stranded in Paris, becomes the baby's nurse. When Chevalier takes baby, nurse, and the rest of his menage to his fiancee’s home for a week-end, developments are fast, furious and funny. There will be excellent supporting features, and a dance will follow at 10.15 p.m., when music will be supplied by Hoare's Orchestra.
