SOUTH CANTERBURY TOURNEY OPENS WINDY CONDITIONS AT MAORI PARK While to some extent the windy conditions militated against good play, the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association’s annual tournament had a very successful opening at Maori Park yesterday morning. Good progress was made throughout the day and the more interesting stages of the tournament should be entered on this afternoon, when the semi-finals of the men’s championship singles and doubles will be played. Although to some extent the Nunneley Casket and Wilding Shield matches at Christchurch affected the entries from the point of view of quality, the representation of players at this year’s tourney is very satisfactory. In view of the New Zealand championship meeting at Christchurch being held on the dates usually allotted to the South Canterbury Association, it was deemed advisable to bring the fixture forward a week this year, it being considered by the committee that the Nunneley Casket and Wilding Shield matches would provide lessimportant attractions than the national tennis fixture. The decision appeared to be on right lines, as there is a good sprinkling of prominent visiting players, including T. Rhodes Williams, B. B Loughnan, and D. W. J. Gould (Christchurch), A. S. Ross, D. A. Highet, and E. P. Drew (Otago), R. Pattinson (West Coast) as well as ranked South Canterbury players. The men’s championship section this year is strong, but the same cannot be said of the women’s championship classes which are very neglected. All handicaps are well supported and the play generally is keen and interesting. The courts yesterday were fast and in splendid order. The arrangements for the tournament worked splendidly, and this was largely due to the efficient time-table system of control evolved and managed by the president (Mr Robt. Wilson). The system had the co-operation of players, and all courts were quickly filled throughout the day. The secretary (Mr F. J. Cook) carried out his duties to the satisfaction of all, the executive officers receiving the wholehearted support of the committee and a willing band of umpires. The officials were:—Vice-presidents’. Messrs A. N. Leslie and G. F. Smythe; referee, Mr Warne Pearse; tournament committee: Messrs R A. Holdgate, C. S. Hammond, N. A. Moore, W. Mantell, P. W. Young. Felton and Miss N. Paterson (owe 4/6), 9-8. NOTES ON THE CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY MEN’S SINGLES. G. C. Reid (Timaru) .iad little difficulty in disposing of N. Patchett iWellir.jton*, formerly of Timaru, in an e !y championship singles match, 6-i, 6-1. Reid was generally superior to his opi nent. The result in the match oetween P McLachlan (Christchurch) and J. Taylor (Timaru) was somewht t si ii tr. Taylor secured only one ga ne in the first set, but had the better of

two games in the second session on ais service.

M. Crowley (Timaru) was too strong for Price (Christchurch) who went down to the tune of 6-0, 6-0. Crowley gave his opponent no quarter and few games reached the deuce stage. D. W. Gould, a Christchurch ranged player and E. S. Dixon fought out a bright first set in a match which went to three sets. Dixon captured the first session 6-4 but after Gould settled down he played sound tennis and had little difficulty in taking the next two sets 6-1, 6-1. N. Salmon (Temukai was perhaps a trifle unfortunate in meeting Wallace Robertson, South Canterbury’s first string in the opening round. Robertson was never extended to take the match 6-1, 6-0. Warne Pearse, who has figured in South Canterbury championship tennis for many years fought out a marathon second set with I. Mathieson (Timaru) after the latter had had the better of the opening set 6-2. In the concluding session Mathieson had the lead 7-6, but Pearse captured the next two games, for Mathieson to take the following game and make the score 8-8 Mathieson won the next on his service, but the final exchange went to deuce twice before Mathieson could secure the deciding point. E. A. Pearce (Dunedin) beat C. R. Hedges (Oamaru) in advantage sets, 7- 7-5. Hedges won the first game his service at love and Pearce took the next at love also off his service and from there ran to a 4-1 lead. Hedges equalised at 5 all but Pearce took the odd game and won -is deciding one after a struggle which went to five deuces. In the second set he took the lead at 2-0, but Hedges took the next two games and from that point the score crept to 3 all, 4 all and 5 all. In the last two gam* s Pearce showed an improvement in form and ran out the winner 7-5. The first match to go to three secs was that in which J. L. Mackay (Timaru) defeated D. Martin (Christchurch) 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Mackay gave his opponent little chance in the first sit running through Martin’s defence with his fast service. Martin struck form in the second set and completely turned the tables after losing the first two games and being behind, 3-1. He then took three games in a row for Mackay to equalise at 4 all and the Christchurch man won the next two convincingly to take the set. Mackay recovered in the deciding set, Martin being aced several times off his opponent’s service and w r inning only two games. D. Highet (Dunedin) b?.d a fairly easy first round victory over P. W. Young (Timaru) running out a winner in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. C. Shenkin (Auckland) accounted for W. McCarthy (Dunedin) 6-3, 7-5, the Dunedin man making a bold bid in the second set ‘but being unable to withstand Shenkin’s attack. The surprise of the tournament yesterday was the defeat of B. B. Loughnan, ranked eleventh on the Canterbury ladder, by Dr W. R. Fea, who occupies sixth place on the South Canterbury ranking list. Loughnan. who v/as obviously not up to his usual form was weak in all departments of the game, and frequently double faulted. His timing and judgment was often at fault. Fea, on the other hand, played steady tennis. He lost the fir.t and third games in the opening set, but reeled off five in succession. The second set was more interesting, but Fea secured a commanding lead w’h°n he won four games after losing ihe first off his own service. The issue was never in doubt. Robertson’s entrance into the second round did not present him with much difficulty. He accounted for McLachlan 6-2, 6-2, in a match whi;h was characterised by Robertson’s accurate driving and good overhead work.. McLachlan gave a much better display in the doubles. One of the greatest marathons of ffie day was witnessed when Mathieson went down to Pearce 6-1, 4-6, 9-7, ten match points being equally divided. Mathieson started off brilliantly and his long crisp driving worried the Otago man. The second set was productive of good tennis, especially when the heavy wind blowing at the time was taken into consideration. Mathieson took the first game and Pearce the next. Mathieson won the third, but his opponent collected three running. Mathieson fought hard to take the next two, and a stern struggle ensued before the Otago man won the next two to take the set. Mathieson again made a good start in the third session by winning the three first games. The next four games were halved, Pearce making the score 6-5 when he collec red the following four games. The match became exciting when 8-8 was called, but at this stage, Mathieson was seriously troubled by an attack of cramp. The next game went to deuce before it fell to Pearce and the set was captured by the Otago man with a victor; in the last game at 40-30. Mathieson played some oi his best tennis, and it appeared that the tables might have been changed had the Timaru man shown more ability at close quarters. Reid entered the second round f the singles when he accounted for Highet an Otago ranked player 6-0, 6-2. Reid played sound tennis and gave his opponent little quarter A surprise in the second round came when C. Minifie beat J. Satterthwaite 8- 0-6, 6-4. Satterthwaite started by winning three games and Minifie took uie next four. Satterthwaite collected the two following, and the score was brought to 5-5 when Minifie won the next. Satterthwaite won the next, but Minifie placed the first S':t beyend doubt when he won the three last games in succession. In the second set Satterthwaite gave his opponent no chance and annexed every game, but Minifie battled hard in the third, which he took through his steadiness. Although he won the first set with ease, J. Mackay had a stern fight ii. the secor. 1 set with D. W. Gould, whom he disposed of 6-2, 9-7. Mackay’s service was again well to the fore, but his opponent went to pieces in the last two games, which Mackay collected with the loss of only one point in each case. Women’s Sirtgles. Miss Margery Gibson’s experience in championship tennis stood her in good stead when she met Miss Jean Brewer, another Timaru player. Miss Brewer won the opening game of the mated, but failed to extend her opponent and was oeaten 6-1, 6-1. Miss N. Sullivan, the promising young South Canterbury player, who performed very creditably at the last tournament, entered the second round of the singles after an easy victory against Miss M. Rolleston (Timaru'. Miss Rolleston was able to secure only one game in the first set, while in the second session Miss Sullivan displayed superior all round courtcraft ai d took the set 6-0. Miss Diana Smythe played a solid and accurate game to beat Miss M Bridges, also of Timaru, 4-6, 6-5. 6-3 There was little between the pair •»> the first set. Miss Bridges collected tin* first two games and Miss Smythe the next. Each player then reeled otf three games in succession, the last game being secured by Miss Bridges off Miss r. - the’s sendee, with the loss of only one point. Miss Smythe commenced well in the second set, and won cho first three games. Miss Bridges to >k the I'tree following. Both players frequently over-drove I the back line, while Miss Morrison's hard hitting frequently saw her in trouble. Women’s Doubles. Misses M. Morrison and N. Sullivan quickly ran to a 3-0 lead in the first set of their match against Misses D. Smythe and J. Brewer, and kept the pressure up to come out on top with the loss of only two games. The second set was more closely contested, the games going alternately to 2 all, Misses Morrison and Sullivan taking the next two games to lead 4-2, but Misses Smythe and Brewer equalised at 4 all. Misses Morrison and Smythe took a game each off their services and Misses Morrison and Sullivan capped off a good set with a kre game to win 6-5. Misses M. Gibson and R. Rolleston proved too strong for Misses M. Bridges and M. Rolleston. in the first round of the women’s championship doubles, the former pair winning to the extent of 6-0, 6-2. The game w<?s not productive of very bright tennis, the combination of the winners being the only feature. Men’s Doubles \/Inning the first set against Warne Pearse and C. S. Hammond (Timaru), N. Satterthwaite and T. Morrison gave promise of developing into an effective combination, the older pair capturing only t" games. Satterthwaite and his partner had to fight harder in the second, session however, each pair taking a game in turn to bring the total to 5-5. Satterthwaite took the next game at 40-30, while the opposing pair secured only one point in the last to lose the set 5-7. Robertson and J. Satterthwafie (Timaru met with stiff opposition ir their match against McLachlan (Christchurch) and C. Minifie (Timaru) which they won 9-7, 6-3. Neither pair played very high standard tennis and the firs: set was in doubt until the last point which was won after 40-’*o had been reached. In the second set. however, the Timaru players showed better combination, Robertson’s overhead work being a feature. The first set of the match between Rhodes-Williams (Christchurch) and Pearce (Dunedin) and Drew and Highet (Dunedin) produced a stem struggle the former pair getting home by the narrow margin of 7-5. The second set proved easy i.or the leaders who took it to the tune of 6-2. Drew displayed an all-round appreciation of doubles play, and in this : .atch gave one of his best exhibitions of the day.
