The Christmas Day festivities suddenly ended in Melbourne late in the afternoon, when a terrific thunderstorm broke over the city and suburbs. The city streets were flooded ana traflftc dislocated. It was nearly an hour before the trams could leave the city. Water rushed over the bonnets of motor cars, hundreds of cars being stranded in the streets. Six hundred families were forced to abandon their homes at Kensington, when the canal outlet from Moonee ponds creek broke its banks. Last night thousands of tons of earth and water swept through 10 streets in the low-lying area adjoining'the creek. Tlie damage is very heavy. An early morning check showed that several people were not accounted for.
