OUTLOOK FOR BUTTER
RETAIL PRICE REMAINS LOW. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, December 25. It was hoped that the new restrictions on Australian and New Zealand butter exports would have steadied the market. This unfortunately has not been the Case and prices declined 3/to 4/-. Consumption is still very good with retail prices 9d to lOd a pound, and stocks in cold store have been reduced to 440,000 boxes, but heavy gradings of Australian and New Zealand and large quantities due to arrive in January made buyers nervous, and they are only operating from hand to mouth.
There is one favourable factor In the position, namely, a considerable shrinkage of Continental supplies, except Russian, which continue larger than last year. 1
Cold stores stock of Russian and Baltic butters rapidly declined, however, and should be practically cleared by the end of the year, so Empire butter will have a larger outlet with Danish the only serious competitor.
