ALLEGED FRUAD
COMPANY MANAGER REMANDED By Telegraph—Press Association GISBORNE, December 8. This morning, Detective McLeod arrested Charles Goldsmith, manager of the Waiapu Farmers’ Co-operative Trading Company, on a charge of a serious nature. In making an application for a remand, the detective stated that protracted inquiries were entailed. The charge preferred against Goldsmith was that “on or about June 8, 1933, at Tikitiki, with intent to defraud, he did obtain from H. J. Fletcher, postmaster at Tikitiki, the sum of £BO, the property of the New Zealand Government Maori Unemployment Relief Fund, by means of certain pretences, to wit. by falsely representing that, one Wi Matahiki, had been employed on certain work under the Maori Unemployment Relief Fund. Accused appeared before the Court at Port Awanui this morning, and was remanded until January 17. The remand was granted on the detective's application, and with the consent of the accused. In making the application. Detective McLeod stated that considerable inquiries had yet to be made, necessitating a remand of the accused, who had promised to afford every assistance in the inquiries. Application was mad" for bail, and the detective that the bail should be fixed in a substantial amount, as many hundreds of pounds were involved. Ball w’as allowed in the sum of £SOO. in accused's recognisance, together with a surety of an equal amount.
