WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

ROSEYVILL. A good number of members and visitors attended the monthly meeting of the Rosewill Women's Institute. Mrs Brosnahan presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Porter and Mrs Kitchen in their recent bereavements. It was decided to give a donation to the school committee for the use of the school during the year. Arrangements were made for the children's Christmas party. Mrs Brown, of Timaru, gave a demonstration of making practical Christmas gifts, in which all members took a keen interest.

A motion of regret was passed at the loss of two members. Mrs Squire and Mrs Kitchen, from the district.

The competitions, judged by Mrs Brown, Mrs and Miss Borrell, resulted; Class A—Rose—Mrs Moore 1, Mrs Steven 2, Mrs Gill 3. Christmas novelty— Miss L. Moore 1, Mrs E. Hart 2. Miss K. Brosnahan 3. Dress not costing more than 7 6—Mrs Chapman 1, Miss K. Brosnahan 2, Miss E. Brosnahan 3. Child’s dress under 5/ Mrs Chapman 1, Mrs Bailey 2. Class B—Rose—Miss M. Moore 1. Miss M. Chapman 2, Miss L. Beckingsale and Miss J. Fraser equal 3. Christmas novelty—Miss M. Moore 1, Miss J. Fraser 2. Dress under 7/6—Miss J. Fraser 1, Miss J. Divan 2. Miss M. Moore 3. Child's dress—Miss J. Divan 1.

The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Squire, Smith, Paterson and Miss Smith.

OTIPt A. At the November meeting of the Otipua Women’s Institute Mrs Hill presided over a good attendance of members. After the usual business had been attended to, Mrs Arden gave a talk on the conference held in Timaru.

As it was “Young People’s” afternoon Miss N. O'Donoghue then took the chair and a very enjoyable programme was arranged. Miss Jeffree (Timaru) gave a demonstration of stencilling, which w r as much appreciated by all. A pianoforte solo was given by Miss Alice Walters, and vocal solos by Miss Molly Black and Mr Leo. Brosnahan. The competitions resulted.—Best knitted baby’s singlet—Miss May Walters 1, Miss Ada Black 2. Specimen blooms—Mrs Leo Purvis 1, Mrs McTague 2. At the December meeting, Mrs Hill presided over a fair attendance. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs Allen in the death of her father. Miss Smith sent in her resignation as representative for the arts and crafts exhibition and Miss A. Black was appointed in her place. It was decided to hold the Institute picnic at Purvis’s crossing. Miss M. Smith gave an interesting demonstration of making wool mats. Competitions resulted.— Butter sponge: Mrs Leo Purvis 1, Mrs Lunham and Miss Smith equal 2, Mrs Percy Campbell 3. Gems: Mrs G. Jackson 1. Mrs Lunham 2, Mrs P. Campbell 3. Specimen blooms: Mrs Simmons 1, Mrs Hill 2, and Miss Gwen Bennetts 3. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Withell and Shanks and Misses Withell and Smith. PLEASANT POINT. There was a large gathering of members and friends at the annual picnic held in the Pleasant Point Domain. The children particularly had a most enjoyable time, a lolly bag chase being perhaps the most popular event. Ice creams were supplied for both young and old. During afternoon tea, the president, Mrs CartWTight, thanked all the workers particularly Mr Christie.
