AFRICAN POLITICS
GENERAL ELECTION PENDING United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright CAPETOWN, December 6. Important political developments are likely to result from Mr Thielman Roos’ Joining General Hertzog and General Smuts. It is anticipated that the fusion will be completed at the end of the session in June, followed by a general election. (Mr Thielman Roos has been prominent in South African affairs for some years. He held a seat on the Supreme Court Bench, but some time previous to the last general election resigned and threw himself i ito politics asking the electors to eliminate both General Hertzog and General Smuts and form a fusion Government under new leaders, his obvious intention being thnt he should be chosen for the Premiership. With the coming together of General Her'.zog and General Smuts the proposal received a cold douche, and the general election resulted in Mr Roos sustaining a crushing defeat, failing to secure return to the House, whilst the Hertzog-Smuts fusion literally swept the country, the Opposition parties being reduced to less than a dozen. The news contained in the cablegram given above of a further fusion with Mr Roos as an important member, is the first that has reached the Dominion concerning the arrangement indicated.)
