Mr D. Grant returned to Timaru from the south yesterday.
Mr G. Rodda, assistant secretary to the Treasury, is visiting Timaru. Mr G. R. Park, who has been bailiff of the Magistrate's Court, crier of the Supreme Court, and maintenance officer at Timaru for the last four years, has received notice of his appointment as assistant bailiff at Christchurch. Mr J. C. Young, of Timaru, has received advice that hr has passed sr.e practical .cction of tee State examination under tr.e Opticians Board of Now Zealand. The examination was held in Wellington in November. Inspector R. Smith, of the Sydney Police Force, who has been spending a holiday in New Zealand, w’ill return to Sydney by the Maunganui next Tuesday.
Mr G. S. Finlayson, manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Gore, will retire at the end of the present year. His successor is Mr R. Archibald, of the Edendale branch. Mr Hall, of the Christchurch branch, will take Mr Archibald’s place. Mr P. Williams, son of Canon Williams, will leave Auckland this month for Melanesia, and will assist at the boys' school at Vureas, New Hebrides. Mr Williams was educated at Christ’s College, and for the last five years has been studying for holy orders.
Mr John Bishop, conductor of the Royal Wellington Choral Union for the last six years, has resigned his position and will shortly be leaving New Zealand for Australia, says a Press Association message from Wellington. Messrs F. T. M. Kissel, chief electrical engineer to the Public Works Department and R. G. Mac Gibbon, district electrical engineer, were in Timaru yesterday. They conferred with members of the South Canterbury Electric Power Board and the Timaru Borough Council in regard to the proposed shifting to a new site of the sub-station at Grant's Hill. The following promotions, involving transfer of officers in the Government Life Insurance Department have been announced by the Public Service Commissioner:—Mr T. Casserley, Wellington, to district manager, Palmerston North; Mr S. W. R. Tovey, Invercargill, to district manager, Whangarei; and Mr C. C. N. Johnston, Christchurch, to chief clerk, Invercargill.
