APPLICATION TO NO. 8 AUTHORITY No. 8 Licensing Authority, comprising Messrs C. P. Agar, Christchurch (chairman), M. Bethell (Culverden), and G. S. Cray (Timaru), spent another full day in Timaru yesterday in considering applications for licenses to transport goods by road. Mr E. S. Brittenden (Christchurch), district traffic manager of railways appeared for the Railways Board. In most cases licenses were granted, many on the application of the Railways Board and other objectors being amended. Mackenzie County. U. Rollinson (Albury), was granted a continuous license to operate in the Albury district with a route license from Timaru to Fail-lie. W. Barwood, H. Dixon, and W. J. A. Phillips were granted licenses to operate in different parts of Mackenzie County. Timaru-Temuka. An application by J. Burns (Temuka) for a daily Timaru-Temuka service and cartage in the Temuka district was granted. Similar applications were granted in respect of C. F. Walker and Son (Temuka), and G. A. Paterson (Temuka). Timaru-Raincliff. H. Gould and Company (Timaru), applied for a continuous license between Timaru-Raincliff via Pleasant Point. Mr Brittenden said that the company was entitled to cart wood from Raincliff to Timaru, but he objected to general goods being carried to Timaru. The license was granted on the understanding that only small goods excluding grain, wool, and farm produce were carried. Application by C. Duncan (Temuka) to operate a lorry for the carting of general goods and firewood within a radius of eight miles of Temuka was approved, the applicant being granted also a route authority to cart wood blocks for the R.S.A. to Timaru. A similar application from P. McPherson (Temuka) in respect to wood was granted. Geraldine County. Continuous and seasonal licenses were granted W. O. Smith of Orari, (Mr G. J. Walker), to operate in the Geraldine County, and travel to a farm on the Pleasant Point Road in Levels County, The application of N. Geraldine-Christchurch was not approved. H. A. Davison and M. Kelberg (Pleasant Point), were granted licenses to operate in Levels County. Objections Overcome. After a conference with Mr Brittenden and a representative of the Kurow Motor Company, during which objections were considered and settled, the following were granted licenses to operate in areas agreed on by the conference: A. J. Clark, R. Oliphant, G. G. Nutsford, G. G. Cross, and W. Davison (Timaru). F. R. Deans, G. Patterson, and W. S. Cole (Timaru), were refused licenses to operate further than the five mile limit. It was pointed out that none could establish an automatic right. Ashburton Requests. L. F. Wood (Mr G. J. Walker) applied for a license for a new service in the Mount Somers district. An objection was raised by Mr H. J. Knight on behalf of J. W. Comyns. The application was granted. Mrs A. J. Hix (Mount Somers) was granted an area license for Ashburton County with a route deviation of half a mile via Greenstreet to Ashburton. Reserved Decisions Given.
