SENIOR FOOTBALL COMPETITION

PLEASANT POINT AND GERALDINE ENTRIES ACCEPTED. DISCUSSION AT RUGBY UNION MEETING* The prospects of the senior teams entered in the Rugby Union’s competitions by Pleasant Point and Geraldine Clubs were the subject of some discussion at Monday night’s meeting of the Management Committee of the Union.

Mr R. Judge said that he had seen the Geraldine team in action on Saturday, and, while they were a light side, he thought that they would have quite a strong team. They had not much hope of winning many games, but they ■were prepared to turn out every Saturday. Mr W. Quirke said he had it from the man at the head of the Geraldine side that they were not hopeful of carrying on right through the season. Mr Judge: “They were very optimistic on Saturday.” It was Mr A. H. Clemens’s opinion that Geraldine ought to be encouraged to enter a senior team. Although they might not win many games they would guarantee to turn out every Saturday, win or lose. It was not their intention to poach players from other Clubs, and he did not think they were going to. The whole of Geraldine was behind the team, and he understood no difficulty would be placed in the way of players wishing to get the afternoon off to play in the competition. If the Club were allowed to play a senior team it would give a great fillip to football in Geraldine.

The chairman (Mr J. O’Leary) pointed out that if an affiliated Club entered a ’team the Union could only accept the entry, but they wanted some sort of guarantee that they would continue throughout the season. “Geraldine entering a senior team in the competition might be for the good of football generally, but it will cripple either Temuka or Waihi,” said Mr Quirke. “Either Temuka or Waihi will have to go out; they won’t be able to carry on.”

The chairman repeated that as both Point and Geraldine were affiliated Clubs, the Union could do nothing but accept their entries, and the subject was not pursued further.
