Women have been thrilled to hear that the new “crackled” silks, reminiscent in their effect of crinkled crepe paper, have received royal approval. Cn her visit to a store for shopping the other day the Queen wore a Mediterranean blue coat of crackled silk crepe with the popular double skin sable stole of the moment. At this same store, in the toy department, the Queen was told that Princess Elizabeth had set a new fashion in dolls’houses. These have now to be big enough for their owners to get into them, as a result of the miniature house given to the Princess by the people of Wales, which is envied by every child in the Kingdom. On her expedition the Queen bought English soft toys, silverware and Scottish cut glass.

The marriage celebrated in the Christchurch Cathedral, when Miss Carol West-Watson, daughter of the Bishop of Christchurch, was married to Mr Leicester C. Webb, was the seventh ceremony to be performed in the long history of the Cathedral. Miss West-Watson was the fourth bishop’s daughter to wear a wedding veil in the building. The first marriage to be celebrated was on September 22, 1887. Mr George Hampton Rhodes (Claremont), a member of a family indissolubly connected with the early history of Canterbury and the building of the Cathedral, was married by Bishop Harper to Miss Alice Thierens, a

member of a well-known South Canterbury family. The first bishop’s daughter to be married in the Cathedral was Miss Alice Ethel Julius, daughter of the then Bishop Julius. She was married to the Rev. Cecil Wilson, by the Bishop of Wellington. Later, the Bishop of Wellington performed the marriage ceremony for another member of the Julius family, on April 18, 1900, when he married Miss Ella Caroline Julius to Mr Arthur Stanley Elworthy. On April 2. 1902, Mr H. M. Reeves, a brother of the late Hon. William Pembcr R,eeves. was married to Miss Emily Harper, daughter of Dean Walter Harper. The Dean performed the ceremony for his own daughter. Once again a daughter of Bishop Julius wore a wedding veil in the Christchurch Cathedral, and the- Bishop of Wellington performed the ceremony for the third time lor a member of the Julius family when, on February 14, 1906, Miss Mary Ellen

Julius was married to the Rev. Arthur Lloyd Hansell. The last wedding in \ the Cathedral prior to this week was I that of Miss Bertha Julius to Mr i Percy Elworthy, about 25 years ago. I Twenty-six years after the honour and i privilege of being married in the Christchurch Cathedral has fallen on ! the daughter of the successor of Arch- | bishop Julius, who saw four of his j children married in the historic build- j ing.
