OPTIMISTIC NOTE IN REVIEWS BRITAIN FACES STERN REALITIES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received December 30, 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, December 30. “The Times” describes 1932 as a year of experimental activity. The paper says there are really two continuous threads running through the whole of British policy at present. The first is the determination to adapt national policy to the economies of the new age of abundance; and the second to secure international agreement, by ending the chaotic financial and political relations between the nations, which are a menace, not only to economic recovery, but also to the peace of the world. The British people are cool and courageous enough to understand that the right road to recovery must be arduous and the journey long. BETTER TONE IN BRITAIN. AUSTRALIAN BANKERS’ CAUTIOUS STATEMENT. United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received December 30, 9.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, December 30. The opinion that no real Improvement in world conditions can be looked for, until a substantial rise in commodity prices has been effected, was expressed by Mr G. W. Riddle, Governor of the Commonwealth Bank, upon his return from London. He added, however, that a better tone was now apparent in financial circles.
