WOMEN’S INSTITUTE The monthly meeting of the Rangitata Women’s Institute was held on Thursday evening, Mrs Brodie presiding over a good attendance of members and friends. The meeting opened with the ringing of the Institute ode. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr A. H. Abbott. Mesdames Rutherford and Polaschek were elected delegates to attend the half-yearly Federation meeting, at' Geraldine.

A competition for patched pair of men’s trousers was won by Mrs W. Hearn 1, Mrs G. Tate 2, and Mrs V 7. Millar J.

The competition for November w T ill be for vase of flowers, Mrs D. Taylor (Temuka) kindly donating a special prize. After the business part of the meeting was concluded, Mrs Brodie introduced Mrs Brenton (Belfield. Mrs J. O. J. Olliver (Temuka) and Mr H. McCully (Arundel). Mrs Brenton gave an instructive demonstration of raw wool rug-making, and also explained the washing and dyeing of the wool. Mrs Brenton also showed some very fine specimens of her work, including a finished raw wool rug of a very pretty design, tin foil pictures and several beautiful articles made of papier mache, and all were greatly admired. Mrs Olliver gave an interesting talk on New Zealand industries, and Mr McCully showed an interesting collection cf Maori curios, explaining the use of each article. At the conclusion, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to both speakers and demonstrator on the motion of Mrs Polaschek, and carried unanimously. For a competition for the best thrift article, a cup was generously donated by the president, Mrs R. B: odie. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Watts (3) and Yoiidale. The singing of the National Anthem brought a pleasant evening t- a- '•loseSocial Evening - . Another successful social evening arranged by the Hobson Hall Committee was held in the Rangitat.a Island Hall on Saturday evening. The attendance was good, and a very pleasant evening was spent. Keen interest was taken in the card tournament, which was won by Mrs Hearn and Mrs M. Fahey. The previous winners were Miss Hazel Tate and Mr C. Preston, Mrs G. Tate and Mr S. Olliver.
