WHEAT DUTIES

CONFERENCE WITH MINISTER TO-DAY.

The vital importance of the wheat industry to South Canterbury is to be impressed on the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. C. E. MacMillan) to-day. when a representative gathering is to meet him in the Little Playhouse at 1.30 p.m. It is expected that Mr W. T. Ritchie (president of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce) will occupy the chair, and the wheat position is to be explained by Messrs J. C. Hay representing the Farmers’ Union), G. A. M. Macdonald (Agricultural and Pastoral Association), and A. M. H. Shirtcliff (wheatgrowers). It is anticipated that a large number of growers will be present, while retailers, tradesmen, commercial men, manufacturers, and others interested in wheat production have been invited.

The importations of Australian wheat into New Zealand of late have aroused the disfavour of the wheat producers of the Dominion, and the position should be fully ventilated by the speakers today.
