LOWRY’S RETIREMENT. HOPES FOR RECONSIDERATION. By Telegraph —Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 29. “I very much regret to tell you that I have finished with the game. It is an extremely sad decision to have made, and no doubt you will realise I do not make it lightly,” wrote T. C. Lowry, former New Zealand and Wellington cricket captain, in announcing his retirement from cricket, to a Wellington cricket official. It Is felt in official cricket circles that the value of Lowry’s leadership alone is too great to be lost to the game, and some hope is entertained that Lowry will postpone his retirement. RAILWAY CLUB. The second annual meeting of the Railway Cricket Club was held in the Social Hall on 13th September, Mr G. A. McLean presiding over a good attendance of members. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, congratulated members on the success of the team in its first season in the competition. The team played 15 matches, winning 6. drawing 2, and losing 7; finishing sixth in the competition of 11 teams. The most successful batsmen were—Kane 278 runs, average 31; Bradley 267, average 24; machin 254, average 14; Lawson 180, average 12; Dickson 148, average 10. The best bowlers were—Bradley 29 wickets, average 8.6; Scott 20. average 13; Dickson 16, average 14; Lawson 28, average 14.6. The balance sheet showed a sma.'l credit. The following office bearers were elected for the season;—President, Mr C. J. Williams; vice-presidents, Messrs H. L. Rigby and G. A. Mac Lean; secretary, Mr P. E. Islip; club captain, Mr W. F. Scott; deputy-club captain, Mr J. Machin; general committee, Messrs D. W. Lawson, B. A. Kelly, A, E. Cunningham, A. Anderson, T. Morrison, A. Bradley, G. Dickson; match committee, Messrs W. Scott, J. Machin and team captain; delegate to S.C.C.A.. Mr P. E. Islip. Votes of thanks were passed to the Caledonian Society, Mr W. Drew (the caretaker), Mr Rigby, the Press and the Umpires’ Association. It was decided to apply for the Caledonian Ground at a rental of £2/10 • for the season, and if this application was successful to open on Ist October.
