Concern at the failure of Conciliation Council proceedings regarding the employment of shearers and shed workers was expressed at a meeting of Maoris in Wellington. A motion was carried expressing the opinion that independent bargaining would cause endless discontent and would prove detrimental to both employers and employees. It was decided to request the Prime Minister to endeavour to bring the parties together.
Concern at the “mushroom growth of private kindergartens, consequent upon the raising of the school age to six years,” was expressed in a remit from the Vauxhall Committee received at the quarterly meeting of the Auckland Primary School Committees’ Association. It was urged by the Committee that representations should be made with a view to having these kindergartens and their teachers brought under some system of registration. Several members spoke appreciatively of the work accomplished by the kindergartens, some of which were free. Another member expressed the view that many of the teachers in kindergartens were not sufficiently well trained. The matter was referred to the executive of the Association for consideration.
