Hughes (Whangarei) won the Jamieson Belt as the most scientific boxer at the tournament. Finals Described. In the flyweight final, by dint of clever fighting, Gordon soon piled up a good lead on McKay, who realised when the last round commenced that he was well behind. He staged a desperate rally, going in fiercely with both hands, but Gordon met him with stinging lefts and held his own easily. In the bantam final, Roebuck was always doing better than Croull, especially at close quarters, where his right was a dangerous weapon. Occasionally at long range Croull connected with both hands, but although he kept his opponent busy all the time, the winner was obvious from the beginning. In the feather final, Hawes let up in the latter stages, and enabled Turner to make up a lot of leeway and his margin at the finish was not large. Turner did the leading throughout, but Hawes, standing off, scored with both hands frequently in the first two rounds. In the welter final. Hogg (Napier) and Martin (Auckland), a couple of hard-hitting boys, had a real fight, but Hogg was seldom troubled, and won by a wide margin, although his opponent was the early favourite for this weight. Hogg gave a neat, scientific display. In the light final, both were very clever bqys. Purdie was the aggressor most of the time, but Hughes displayed wonderful defence. His countering with the left was particularly effective. Purdie did his best to force the pace in the final round, but Hughes, displaying superior science, quite held his own to take a narrow decision. Roguski gave Soane a good beating on points in the middle-weight final, and only the gong saved the loser from a knock-out in the second round. Roguski dealt out a lot of punishment with his right, but his left was comparatively innocuous. Soane made a good comeback in the third and kept the winner busy over the final stages. The light-heavy final was very tame in the first two rounds. Reeves did a lot of leading and telegraphed his blows to Mullins. Things livened in the last round, when Reeve's punches were much straighter, and just earned him the verdict. In the heavy-weight final, Strickland had an advantage of 10 pounds in weight and had the upper hand all the way. He scored with both hands, especially his left, and in the last punched Bourne very severely. The Christchurch man was as game as they are made, and was still on his feet when the gong sounded.
