TEMUKA

NO LIGHT. The meeting of the Board of Managers of the Temuka Technical School was held up for half an hour on Wednesday evening, through the refusal to function of the gas in the meetm„ room. No amount of coaxing produced a light o£ any strength, and members of the Board, while waiting for one or two late-comers, sat in a practically dark room and hoped for the best It was a matter of striking a match to find the light. The meeting was ultimately held in the dressmaking room, where one light condescended to burn. At the previous meeting of the Board, reference was made to the unsatisfactory nature ol the lighting in the school.

TENNIS OPENINGS. St. Peter’s and Presbyterian Tennis Clubs opened their seasons yesterday afternoon in dull but fine weathei. At both courts large crowds of members and friends were present and an enjoyable afternoon was spent. ST. JOSEPH’S SOCIAL. There was a large attendance at the fortnightly dance held in St. Joseph s Hall on Wednesday evening, many visitors being present from Timaru and surrounding districts. The hostesses for the evening were Mesdames o. J. White and B. Thompson. A fox-trot competition was won by Mr P. Henwood and partner. Miss E. McGarva and Mr L. Cross won the waltzing competition. Music for the dancing was supplied by a Timaru orchestra, and Mr W. Seeler was M.C. GOLF. Good entries have been received for the closing day competition of the Temuka Golf Club. The draw, with handicaps, will be displayed at the pavilion on Saturday before one o clock, also the tees from which players will For those not taking part in the mixed foursomes, there will be an approaching and putting competition. Prizes and cups will be presented at the close of the day’s play. . There were not sufficient entries for a Thursday competition.

WAITOHI WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. On September 21, the monthly meeting Cf the Waitohi Women’s Institute was held. Mrs Sewell (president) presided over a large attendance of members and visitors. One new member was elected. A letter was received from Geraldine asking for two delegates to attend the half yearly Federation meeting to be held in October. —Mrs Sewell and Miss K. Lyon were elected. The hostesses reported on the recent socials held for the piano fund A satisfactory amount was collected. It was unanimously decided to start future meetings at 2 o’clock. There were not many entries for the cbmpetition for best cured skins. Flacings were:—Mrs Duftnill (best cured hide) and Mrs Sewell (best cured skin). Mrs J. Southworth. (Temuka) gave an interesting demonstration on “moccasins made from cured skins," for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses—Mesdames J. Moore, Crombie and Misses F. McKinnon and M. Moore. _ _ „ A roll call, "Uses of a Flour Bag, brought forth some very good hints.

Mr E. Cholerton. representing John R. Procter, Ltd., will be visiting Temuka as usual on Saturday, Ist October, and may be consulted on a.ll defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel
