Mrs C. J. Rule, Christchurch, is the guest of Mrs P. W. Rule, Avenue Road. Miss Mary Gabites, Wai-iti Road, has returned from a visit to Hawke’s Bay. Mr and Mrs Sutcliffe, Christchurch, are staying at the Bungalow, Wai-iti Road.
Mr and Mrs J. H. Ford, Evans Street, have returned home after an extended holiday in the south. Mr and Mrs W. McGrath, Catherine Street, left on Thursday car a visit to Wellington and Auckland.
Mrs Sinclair-Thomson, “The Crossing,” Woodbury, who is staying with Mrs H. Sinclair-Thomson, Park Lane, wiil return home to-day.
Mi's Ronald Orbell, Oamaru, will arrive on Monday to stay with Mrs J. Scott, Seddon Street, for the New Zealand golf championships.
Mrs Russell Grace and Miss Grace, Wanganui, who will be competitors in the New Zealand golf championships to be held in Timaru next week, will be guests at the Grosvenor. Miss Halmai Loughnan ( Christchurch) and Miss Betty Rutherford (Hawarden) will be the guests of Mrs E. G. Kerr, “Ardgour,” Sealy Street, for the New Zealand golf championships. Mrs H. S. Lawrence, Miss Barbara Gould (Christchurch), and Miss Elspeth Barton (Featherston) have taken Mr H. Sinclair-Thomson’s house for the New Zealand golf championships, and will arrive in Timaru early next week.
The engagement of Miss Betty Ross Gore, daughter of the late Mr Ross Gore and Mrs Ross Gore, of Gladswood Gardens, Double Bay, Sydney (formerly of Wellington), to Mr Lewis Shaw, popular young English actor, has been announced. Mr Shaw was in New Zealand a few years ago in the role of the stage version of “Young Woodley,” and later as Lieutenant Raleigh in "Journey’s End.” Visitors to Timaru for the New Zealand golf championship, which begins next week, will include Mesdames M. One of the most popular musical functions of the year took place in the Theatre Royal last night, when the second subscription concert of the Orchestral Society was given. Under the conductor-ship of Mr W. H. Osborne, the orchestra gave a very fine programme to the large and appreciative audience.
Miss Mary Pratt (Dunedin), a soloist, wore an attractive frock of ring velvet in a pale shade of pink, the long slimfitting bodice being finished with a swathe of velvet crossed in front, and forming a bow at the back. A long rope of pearls and pearl ear-rings were a charming finish. Mrs G. A. Martin, who acted a* accompaniste, wore a frock of beige lace and georgette and amber beads. Miss Evelyn Hosking, who accompanied on the harp, wore a simple frock of black velvet.
Miss Pratt and Mrs Martin were presented with beautiful bouquets, and Miss Hosking received a tall basket filled with Iceland poppies. Those present included—Mr and Mrs P. W. Rule, Mrs C. J.
