The unemployed rioted and stoned the police outside Stratford town hall, while the Westham Council was receiving a deputation protesting at the cuts in poor law relief. Four policemen were hit, and nine arrests were made. The Council told the deputation it could not restore the cuts, but promised that all reported cases of hardship would be specially considered
