CROWN TENANTS
WAIHAO DOWNS BRANCH. At a 'well-attended meeting of Crown Tenants in the Waihao Downs School on Saturday evening, the president (Mr H. M. MacFarlane) welcomed several new members from outlying districts. Mr MacFarlane gave a report of the Ministerial visit, and answered numer- . ous enquiries .appertaining thereto. He - referred to the Ministerial rebuke in - regard to correspondence, and moved —“That, while appreciating the good •work done, the Waihao Dowis Branch of the New Zealand Crown Tenants’ Association deprecates the lack of con- • straint exercised in certain correspond-•ence-with the Minister of Lands, and urges- that future representations be coached in prudent phraseology.’’ It was considered necessary. to allay any . ! unfavourable impressions of the work of the Association. After brief discussion this was agreed to. •' The president referred to his visit to Oamaru on the previous day. He, with'the support of Messrs G. Cleland, and B. J. Moyle, had addressed a representative meeting of North Otago settlers, who had linked up with the Association. ■ On the motion of Messrs Moyle and MacFarlane,' the following new members were elected Messrs J. Dench, D. Tavendale, J. Major, Thomson Bros., A. F. Goldsmith, J. P. Morrison. F. W. Smith, Preece Bros., A. Medlicott, G. Cooling, P. F. Smith. Mr G. Barclay said he thought that the Association should act in conjunction , with the farmers’ Union in makf } ,tag fome -..endeavour tq bring about a ' better -system of wool .marketing. He considered the lots could be decreased from four, bales to three bales for the main' catalogue? and that lots under three bales be starred, i Mr MacFarlane spoke in favour of centralisation of sales. In order to give a lead on the question of revaluations when adjustments became the order of the day, and to ’seek to ensure that revaluations are executed on a sound scientific basis the secretary read a paper on the theory of > rent, and endeavoured to show how the primary producers could be put on an equal footing with other sections of the community. Mr Barclay, in discussing the paper, - introduced the Douglas Credit Scheme. As the Subject of the paper was Important, it was decided to hold discussion over in the meantime.
