Replying-to-a'question, Mr Wynyard, motorists’ representative on the Main Highways’ Board, said, the Board was . absolutely-' opposed to any cutting down of the amount of £650,000 considered to be. necessary for the maintenance of-loads.
The election of. officers resulted:— •■President, Mr F.-W. Johnston (Christchurch-); vice-presidents, Messrs F. W. Freeman (Christchurch), D.-J. Wesney (Southland), F. J. Williams (Otago); executive, Messrs W: R: Carey, H. ' c. Harley. B. Falck, W. L. Minson, J. S. Hdwkes, 'Gt Henderson, R. H. Parker; 'Representatives’ Of the West Coast asked for the- erection of a bridge over the Wailftakai-iri on the West Coast Road; Most of the work; they said, coifid be dorte with unemployed labour.
'Mr Wyriyard said ii should be remembered that the Highways ‘Board was SHort of "funds’. So serious was the res'ul'fc (Hat the roads of the Dominion were ' deteriorating to the • extent of £200;,Obo yearly.' The bridge no doubt Was desirable, but there were hundreds of other bridges .all’ over the - Domijdfon requiring; attention when funds were available. 1 The Waimakariri 'bridge, with 1 others,’ would be, considered.
, Mr . C. J. Talbot, counties representative oh ..the Highways Board, said that no’.hipiley was available for construction purposes.
