EXPLORER TO WED

ME LINCOLN ELLSWORTH’S TWO VENTURES. • United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright (Received Sept. 28, 8.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 27. It is learned that Mr Ellsworth, intends to marry Miss Mary Louise Ulmer, the aviatrix, prior to making his Antarctic trip.' She will accompany him to New Zealand, and remain there while he attempts the flight.

Just why a man with a villa in Italy, a castle'in Switzerland, and means enough to' do almost anything he wish- ’ es should choose to make journeys to . -Arctic wastes is best explained by Mr Lincoln Ellsworth himself. After interviewing him some time ago an American journalist came to the conclusion that this desire to explore was to be attributed to Ellsworth’s intense curiosity, his wish to know scientific -'truths'. For this man, whose intention * just announced is to make a trans- ;; Arctic flight in company with Admiral Byrd's pilot Bernt Balchen, hates cities and is never, happier than when he is engaged in some hazardous enterprise. Mr Ellsworth has done much exploring: When a student at Columbia Uni - versity he joined the first exploratory party .sent out to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad across Canada, a trip on which the party lost their way in rQntario, and had to live on horse meat. After, this survey, Mr Ellsworth, now a Civil engineer, was sent to the Prince Rupert terminal as- resident engineer. He then served for five years on the construction, work of the Canadian Pacific raihyayand following that went to Alaska as assistant • engineer with . the. Kongarock Mining Company north of Nome, Prom Alaska he went to Pennsylvania, where his father had coal interests. The son returned to take . charge of 180 coke ovens. •-» It was then that he thought of travelling; still farther afield. He was chosen as a member of the expedition to the Arctic to search for ..Croker Land, ah expedition which .never ing up. the nucleus of the.great herd ■ :: of buffalo which the Canadian Government. formed.’ .Then he went to the . Xhdes'"with ,ah . expedition sent there by Johns Hopkins. University. Followv ing this., bought. his villa in Italy, - but -soon tired of life there, and joined .with the lath Roald Amundsen in two . journeys to the Arctic,, Last year he financed "and helped .to organise the . expedition of Sir . Hubert Wilkins in 'the: .submarine Nautilus. It was reported that the expedition would be , named the "Wilkins-Ellsworth expedition” .. \ ; - I. ' ' ■ -BJS B»
