STATEMENT BY P. AND T. SECRETARY. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, April 11. In a statement on behalf of the bodies concerned, Mr J. H. McKenzie, secretary of the Post and Telegraph Employees’ Association, said the part taken in the recent conference of Industrial Unions by members of his Association, the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, the Railway Tradesmen’s Association, and the Engine Drivers and Firemens Association, was. in the opinion of the four, not only warranted and desirable, but also justified in the fact that the outcome was a representation to the Prime Minister of constructive proposals to meet the economic dislocation of the country, and a common agreement to seek the co-operation of other sections of the community, particularly farmers in an attempt to stem the reactionary legislation of the Government. The four Government Service organisations v/ere the originators and promulgators of proposals which have come to be known as “the Public Service Proposals.’’ Having exhausted every constitutional means of negotiating with the Government as a direct employer of the members represented by the organisations, there was no recourse as a section of the people opposed to deflation, than to act on their status as resnonsible citizens, and co-ordinate effort with other sections of the people who were prepared to fight construct!vejv for the national welfare. They invite constructive criticism. It is hoped that further collaborations with farmers will further their objects, which it is stated were well served in conferring with ! Industrial Unions.
