GERALDINE

A HEAVY DOWNPOUR. The heavy downpour throughout Sunday accounted for a fall of 2.55 inches in the gauge at Mr B. R. Macdonald's “Waitui,” at 9 a.m. yesterday. Fifty-eight points were registered for the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. on Sunday, and three points up to 9 o'clock the previous morning, making a total of 3.16 inches, or well over three inches for 48 hours, the heaviest fall in Geraraine since January 1930, when the abnormal fall of 2.91 inches was registered on the 14th. with a total of 9.17 inches for the month. The rain was even heavier in the Four Peaks district, 2.45 inches being recorded at 9 a.m. yesterday and .75 inches on Sunday, making a total of 3.20 inches registered on the gauge at Mr A. J. Hodgkin's, "Mount Walker.” Heavy rain fell at Peel Forest, where the gauge at Mr J. M. H. Tripp’s “Silverton,” recorded 2.04 inches yesterday. and .66 on Sunday morning, a total of 2.70 since the weather broke. Showery conditions continued in Geraldine yesterday, but the weather showed signs of improving in the late afternoon. The Waihi River is running high, but no trouble is anticipated. The new bridge at the Wilson Street crossing withstood the rush of water without difficulty. VICTORIA LODGE PARADE. The inclement weather on Sunday evening affected the attendance of Brethren of the Victoria Lodge, No. 18, 1.0.0. F. at the church parade at St. Mary's Church, only about 20 braving the elements. In spite of the weather, however, there was a fairly large congregation, and the Vicar (Canon J. F. Coursey) delivered an appropriate sermon. The Geraldine District Band was to have headed the procession, but the arrangement was cancelled, as well as the band concert in the Town Hall after church. WINCHESTER SHOW SUCCESSFUL. The secretary of the Temuka and Geraldine Agricultural and Pastoral Association (Mr J. Kennedy) stated to a 'Herald” representative yesterday, that it was very gratifying that the recent show at Winchester showed a credit balance. The prize money for Thursday's show had been distributed, and he was well satisfied with the success of the function. GOLF. The first round of the Geraldine Golf Club's Kerr Quaich Bogey competition played on Saturday, resulted as follows: A. A. Reiddie beat Captain C. J. Kerr. D. J. Lack beat G. Noy, D. Macdonald beat P Bennett. J. S. Barker beat J. Scott, D. C. Williamson beat E. E. Scott, Dr. G. W. Curtis beat Fairhall. P. G. Withers beat A. D. Sharpe. W. Webb beat M. Baker, G. Glen beat J. D. McKechnie, D. W. Lynn beat A. Jones, Dr. L. C. Mail beat G. N. Feilden, and J. B. Scott beat H. W. Williamson. The results of the first round of the Bogey competition for the Sharpe Cup are as follow:—Miss M. Symmington 1 up. Mrs J. S. Barker all square, Miss M. L. Grant all square. Mrs G. N. Feil len 3 down. Mrs D. J. Lack 4 down. Miss V. Bell 4 down, and Miss P. Sharpe 5 down. MUNICIPAL THEATRE. “A Connecticut Yankee at the Court of King Arthur.” will be screened at the Municipal Theatre to-night and to-morrow evening. The transition of Will Rogers, who plays the title role, from the present to the sixth century Is most amusing. His arrival is not received with enthusiasm by the Knights of King Arthur's Round Table, and he narrowly escapes burning at the stake, and finally, Sir Sagramor, jealous of Rogers’ popularity, challenges him to joust in the big tournament. How Rogers overcomes the burly knight is entirely funny. Then Rogers becomes the unwilling hero selected to rescue the fair Princess Alisande from the wicked Queen Morgan Le Fay. He becomes involved in another series of adventures that conclude in the most "side-splitting” laugh of the picture. Rogers is surrounded by a capable supporting cast which includes Maureen O'Sullivan. Frank Albertson. Myrna Lov. William Farnum, Mitchell Harris and Brandon Hurst. NOTES. Owing to inclement weather the social by the Geraldine Musical Society was postponed. A skating rink will be opened in the Oddfellows' Hall to-morrow evening. The annual meeting of the Geraldine Benevolent Guild will be held in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall next Friday afternoon. The opening shoot of the Citizens' Miniature Rifle Club wifi be held in the Town Hall next Friday evening. John R. Procter, Ltd., representative will be making one of his usual visits to Geraldine on Wednesday, 27th April. Appointments can be made now by ’phoning Mr Morris-Williams
