WHY WOMEN DISAPPEAR. Figures just published in Paris show that 27,000 people disappeared there in the last twelve months, mostly because of debt, love affairs, or in search of adventure. More than 25,000 people were reported missing in New York City last year, including 3500 boys and 2450 girls. Inquiries made by a “Daily Mail'’ reporter reveal that in London an average of twelve people are reporteJ to the police daily as missing, and in the whole of the country 15,000 women and girls are reported missing each year. The majority of the missing Londoners are women and girls, but the proportion of those never traced is less than one in 1000. Less than ten per cent, remain untraced for more than a fortnight, and rarely do they remain untraced for two or Three months. Of the missing persons in the whole of England less than two per *OOO are never heard of again. Men vanish principally because of ■ domestic troubles and because they find their homes unendurable. But many have business worries. Fewer men than women return, one reason being that it is easier for a man to earn a living. Statistics give the following reasons for the disappearance of women and girls:— Fits of temper following quarrels; Love troubles, associations with married men, small thefts; Women of middle age suffering from mild delusions; Girls who disappear merely for the sake of adventure; Girls who go to situations of which their parents may not approve; Girls and women who are “tired ri life,” and commit suicide. Foul play seldom accounts for a disappearance. It is rare indeed that a murderer can completely dispose cf the body of his victim, and the days of the “white slaver” are past, so far as enticing girls from home and smuggling them abroad is concerned. Loss of memory is often the cause. This seems to be growing in London, due, ut is thought, to the intensity of modern life in the metropolis.
