SPORTING

OAMARU JOCKEY CLUB. SUCCESSFUL AUTUMN MEETING. The meeting at Oamaru on Saturday was the most successful financially held by the Oamaru Jockey Club for some years. The attendance was satisfactory, and the totalisator handled £8327 for the afternoon. No autumn meeting was held last season, but the investments showed an increase of £530 over those of the New Year fixture. The course was in better order than at any time since it was remodelled, and excellent racing w T as witnessed. In some cases winners appeared to have a little in hand, but there was then invariably a spirited contest for the minor places, and there was not one poor race on the card. The weather was dull, and for the last two races, which were late in starting, visibility was low, but there was no rain, and conditions were not unpleasant. The programme was run off without formal inquiry of any kind, and generally there was a more cheerful atmosphere than had been the case for some time past. The Gardiner Memorial, the main event, was won decisively by Rarno,, who has won the Banks Peninsula Cup, Waimate Cup, Great Autumn and the race at Oamaru in succession. The salient feature of the racing, however, was the success achieved by horses from E. J. Ellis’s Washdyke stable, which, in the six flat races, secured four wins and a second. Two of the winners were steered by A. E. Ellis, and the other two by L. J. Ellis, while A. E. Ellis was successful also on Ramo. Short-Priced Favourite Wins. In a field of seven in the Autumn Highweight, Appeal was made an oddson favourite, showing twice as much money as Pharaoh, who was £1 better backed than Countermarch. Appeal was quickest to move from Countermarch, but turning into the back Pharaoh joined Appeal in the lead. At the six furlongs the order was Pharaoh, Countermarch, Appeal, Captain’s Gift, but at the far turn Countermarch had headed Pharaoh, who was a couple of lengths ahead of Appeal, Captain’s Gift and Academy, who were in line. Appeal moved up on the rails coming to the home turn, and at the entrance to the straight the order was Countermarch, Appeal, Academy and Pharaoh. Appeal took charge with a furlong to go, and won without being ridden out by a neck from Countermarch. Silver Salver finished well less than two lengths behind Countermarch, with Fair Exchange about three lengths away. Academy was next. An Imported Winner. Late money sent the North Island filly Brown Pearl (in P. T. Hogan’s stable) to the top of the betting on the Novice Handicap, the final figures including Brown Pearl 374, Songbox 328, Metal Bird 287 and Porlock 224. Songbox, who drew the rails, was almost immediately sent to the outside, but she had not given nearly as much trouble as Why Worry (No. 2) or Porlock. Colonel Cygnus was left at the post. At the end of a furlong Denise, Metal Bird, Songbox and Sham Fight were showing out from a bunched field. Denise led Songbox, On Sight and Metal Bird to the straight, and a furlong from home the Australian-bred filly had the race in safe keeping. Metal Bird finished gamely, but Denise had no difficulty in winning by a length. Porlock came with a late run and beat On Sight on the post for third money, but she was two lengths behind Metal Bird. Sham Fight was next. DeI nise is the second of Mr Donald Grant’s Australian fillies to win at Oamaru. The favourite got into trouble at the start and was not afterwards prominent. Ramo Four on End. Ramo 725 and Juniper 525 dominated the betting on the Gardiner Memorial Handicap, the figures dropping then to Trek 203. Passing the stand, with a furlong traversed, Princess Argosy had taken charge from Juniper, Night Effort, Red Racer and Trek. At the seven furlongs Princess Argosy was three lengths in front of Juniper and Night ! Effort, who were two lengths ahead of ! Ramo and Trek. Glenrowan and Full Feather were tailed off. When the far turn was reached, the order was Princess Argosy, Night Effort, Juniper, Ramo, Trek, but coming to the home turn Ramo moved up quickly, and as they swung into the straight it was Princess Argosy, Ramo, Night Effort, Juniper. Ramo headed the leader over a furlong from home, and won comfortably by a length from the imported mare. Juniper, after dropping back ai the turn, was running on again at the end, and was only a length behind Princess Argosy. Night Effort was a poor fourth, with Full Feather next. This was Ramo’s fourth win in succession. Easy for ifard Words. All the acceptors lined up for the Oamaru Trot, for which St. Felix 634, Lord Lupin 399, Auspicious 189 represented public opinion. Lord Lupin. Lady Emmett, Wattle Bell, Regina Derby, Parnell, Harvest Earl, Ayrshire and Auspicious all broke at the start. Hard Words was first to get to work, and when the stand was reached he was well clear of Sunbrown, St. Felix. ! Chenwood, Birnie Bingen and Evening Sun. Hard Words led alcng the back from Sunbrown, St. Felix, and Chenwood. and at the far turn the leaders still were Hard Words, Sunbrown, Chenwood, St. Felix. Rounding the top this quartette were so far in front of Red Spur and Quita, who were leading the next bunch, that it looked as if they would have the finish to themselves. Hard Words, driven by the veteran Newton Price, was never challenged, and won easily by three lengths, but there was a good contest for the rest of the money. St. Felix struggled home a length in front of Sunbrown, who beat Chenwood by a > neck. Quita and Red Spur were only | necks further back. Fast But Unlucky. Betting was well distributed over six of the ten runners in the Hack 1 Handicap, the top-liners being Red ' Roval 405. lan’s March 396, Some Good | 359, Pakitere 275, Hot Tea 243, and I Kerbside 230. Kerbside was disinclined i to join the others at the barrier, but 1 eventually lined up quietly.* ExecuI tion, the most troublesome of the { ethers, got the worst of the start, and i Red Royal and lan’s March were chopped out. Kerbside made play from Some Good and Pakitere, and at the top of the bend Kerbside and Seme Good were a couple of lengths in front of Hot Tea and Pakitere, who were clear of the next bunch. Kerbside drew away when the straight was reached, and won with something in reserve from Pakitere, who battled cn well and beat Hot Tea by a neck. lan’s March, Colonel Cygnus and Some Good were nearly in line a neck behind the third horse, with Colonel Cygnus travelling fastest of the whole field. Kerbside is very speedy, but is an unruly mare, and she was ridden by the hurdle jockey H. Anderton.

Gold Pit Wins Narrowly. Gold Pit was backed down to nearly even money in a good field for the Flying Handicap, with Dunraven in considerably more demand than any of the others. Master Anomaly was nasty at the barrier, and started from the outside. The three nearest the rails— Meadow Lark, Gold Pit and Solmar — were first to show, but Gold Pit soon shook off Meadow Lark, and ran to the far turn followed by Master Anomaly and Captivate. Gold Pit and Master Anomaly led round the top from Dunraven and Captivate, there being a couple of lengths between the two pairs. Gold Pit drew away from Master Anomaly after the straight was reached and looked like winning easily, but Master Anomaly came with a great dash over the last half furlong, and was only half a head too late to catch the tiring favourite. Dunraven was two lengths further back, a length in front of Ranelagh. Captivate and Meadow Lark were next to finish. Hot Favourite Beaten. For the Waikaura Trot, the Oamarutrained bracket, Black Jester-Nel-son Guy, was made an odds-on chance with 742 units, with Lena Bingen 239, Avaunt 204, and Lord Lupin 194 next in demand. The whole field moved off correctly, but after going a few yards Hard Words fell and brought down Avaunt, and Almcnt Cling was interfered with. Lena Bingen, who hails from Central Otago, Evening Sun, Sunbrown, and Erin’s Chance led past the stand, and Lena Bingen turned into the back stretch closely followed by Sunbrown, Lord Lupin, Erin’s Chance, Evening Sun, Black Jester and Tat Wrack. Going to the far turn the leaders were Lena Bingen, Sunbrown. Lord Lupin. Black Jester, with Tat Wrack and Evening Sun next. Black Jester joined Lena Bingen at the heme turn, and had her measure with a furlong to go, but he was unable to stall off a challenge from Lord Lupin, the Rakaia gelding wearing the favourite down and winning by a length. Lena Bingen was nearly two lengths away, half a length ahead of Tat Wrack. Nelson Guy was fifth. The accident at the start was understood to be due to one or two drivers pulling up under the impression that they had been recalled. E. J. Ellis’s Fourth Win. The Riccarton winner Weatherly, although he had drawn the outside berth, carried 626 investments in the Farewell Handicap, Pakitere and Crash dead-heating for second favouritism with 571 apiece. Hot Tea and Weatherly broke through the barrier, and the rider of the last-named was fined £3 by the starter, who did not penalise the boy on Hot Tea. Hot Tea began smartly from Night Recital and Crash, but did not hold his place, and when the far turn was reached Crash was in charge from Night Recital, Weatherly and Red Royal. Red Royal travelled fast round the curve, and led to the straight from Crash, Pakitere, Weatherly and Night Recital. Crash appeared to run out a bit and carry Weatherly wide. Red Royal faded when challenged by Pakitere, who came on to win by a neck from Weatherly. The favourite finished very resolutely after losing a bit of ground at the home turn, and was catching Pakitere fast. Crash was nearly two lengths away, a length in front of Night Recital. Red Royal faded into fifth place. Results were as follows: —

Owing to its financial position, and on account of its failure to obtain Government assistance, the Whangarei Racing Club has decided that it cannot take the risk of holding its autumn meeting. At a meeting of the committee to-day it was decided to abandon the fixture. The Whangarei Racing Club executive met to decide whether the autumn meeting of the club would be held, lhe president, Mr R. G. Hosking, stated that the taking up of debentures among members had been very poor, and that the club would have to look to other avenues for its urgent requirements. 'The action of the Borough Council in remitting several hundreds of pounds in rent was greatly appreciated by the club, said Mr Hosking, and he suggested that the club should ask the Government to cancel the balance of the totalisator taxation, amounting to £195. Already the club had paid £950 in totalisator taxation. It was decided to telegraph to Mr A. J. Murdoch, M.P. for Marsden, and members of the Cabinet, asking for a remission of the outstanding amount. If this is granted the meeting will be held.

SUSPENSION REINSTATED. H. GRAY “OUT” FOR THREE MONTHS. By Telegraph—i*ress Association WELLINGTON, April 9. The appeal against the decision of the Auckland District Committee :n the Antique case has been heard and considered by the specially-appointed appeal judges of the Racing Conference, Messrs H. Johnson, C. W. Tringham and H. F. O’Leary, during the last two days, and their judgment was announced this morning. It reverses the decision of the Auckland District Committee and restores the decision of the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s judicial stewards in suspending the jockey, H. E. Gray, for three months for his riding of Antique in the President’s Handicap at the Te Aroha meeting on February 29. The judgment of the appeal judges is as follows: —

“The decision we are directed by the president to review is that of the Auckland District Committee in allowing an appeal by H. Gray against the decision of the Te Aroha Jockey Club in suspending him for a period of three months on the ground that the horse Antique, ridden by Gray in the President’s Handicap at Te Aroha on February 29, 1932, was not run on its merits. We have thoroughly and carefully considered the reports of the proceedings before the Judicial Committee and the Auckland District Committee, and the evidence given before those tribunals and further evidence advanced before us, and the submissions of interested parties. “The officials whose special duty it was to watch the running of horses at the meeting at which the offence was alleged to have taken place were the Judicial Committee of the Te Aroha Jockey Club (composed of experienced racing men) and the Racing Conference’s stipendiary steward present at the meeting. “In our opinion, if, after proper enquiry and investigation, the judicial stewards whose duty it is to supervise the racing come to the conclusion that an offence against the rules of racing.

dependent upon observation of the running of a horse in a particular race, has been committed, the subsequent evidence must be very strong and convincing to enable it to override the unanimous conclusion of those entrusted with the special duty of observation and inference. Fully Justified. “In the particular matter complained of, we consider that the Judicial Committee of the Te Aroha Jockey Cluo was fully justified in its finding on the evidence placed before it. On our own. observations and in our opinion the further evidence given on behalf Of Gray before the Auckland District Committee was not of such nature as to warrant the Auckland District Committee in disturbing or reversing that finding. “We have carefully considered the weight that should be attached to the additional evidence referred to and to the additional evidence submitted to us. We are of opinion that it cannot be held sufficient to cast any reasonable doubt as to the accuracy of the evidence given by the stipendiary steward and on the observations of the Judicial Committee or on the correctness of their conclusions. “Our reason for this opinion is that, in the main, the additional evidence was of witnesses who closely observed the running of Antique over the verv last stages of the race only. Evidence to the effect that Gray, throughout the race, deliberately failed to put r.is horse in a position to have a favourable chance is, apart from Gray’s own evidence, uncontradicted. “We therefore decide that the decision of the Auckland District Committee should be reversed and that the decision of the Judicial Stewards of the Te Aroha Jockey Club be restored.”
