SHEEP FARMING.

To the Editor of the " Tlmaru Herald.” Sir, —There is an important point which most farmers apparently have overlooked, viz., that although sheep can be bought very cheap to-day, the poorest are surely worth more than 2/- each. Why not kill them off gradually; dry and store the pelts for a year or so till they can be turned into money? Fowls and pigs do well on boiled mutton, and there is always a demand for the fat. Those farmers who are turning their sheep on to the hills for the winter are simply throwing good money away owing to the probability of unusually heavy snows being experienced and with small hope of sheep surviving it. A low rainfall, with mild conditions during June, is quite probable, and is usually followed by very rough weather during July. Sheep skins will be valuable within 12 months because few farmers look that far ahead.—l am, etc., C. H. MASON. Timaru, March 18.
