TEMUKA.

FOR FISHERMEN. The month of the Cpihi is enjoying popularity just now, and numerous good catches of salmon have been made, including one of 23£lbs on Tuesday night; three and six on Tuesday, and five yesterday morning. Fishing on Tuesday evening, however, was of short duration, as a very heavy shower, which missed Temuka, drove fishermen in between six and seven o’clock. Yesterday afternoon, the Rangitata, which cleared on Tuesday, was still low and clear and in good order. However, as one fisherman said, anything might happen before to-day, if the wind of yesterday continued. All other rivers, while not carrying a great deal of water, are clear. Some catches of trout are reported, fish of 2, 2 h and 31bs having been hooked in the Temuka River on Tuesday evening where the power lines cross. SCHOOL TENNIS. The St. Joseph’s Convent School tennis championships, commenced on Tuesday afternoon were concluded yesterday. The tournament was the first held by the school and was organised by St. Joseph’s Tennis Club. Results were:—

Leslie), stated yesterday that 75 licenses had been issued in the Temuka district. Five cows and five horses were impounded in Temuka Borough during the past month. The annual meeting of the Temuka Golf Club was held last evening. NOTES.

A harvest-home ball will be held in the Milford Hall to-night.

FRENCH LEAVE.” Reginald Berkley’s war-time farce, “French Leave,” now showing at the Temuka Theatre, represents one of the most complete triumphs to emerge from English studios. As a contrast to the many harrowing war films that have recently been screened, “French Leave.” does not contain one scene which can be described as “sorrowful.” The scenes of this wonderful British production are laid in an officers’ rest camp—behind the line in France—which is occupied by a general, his captains, orderlies, etc. Madeleine Carroll, as Juliette, has the role of her life, and of which she takes the utmost advantage. Maddon Mason is the jealous husband, and plays his part to perfection, whilsc Arthur Chesney as the fierce general, and Sydney Howard as the loyal but scorned orderly, provide a constant flow of laughter. The climax of this picture is as exciting as it is funny. John R. Procter, the Premier Opticians. of Christchurch, will be visiting Temuka and may be consulted at the Crown Hotel on March 28th.
