The number of unemployed now totals 2,691,737, an increase of 57,163 mainly due to temporary coal stoppages. POSITION IN N.S.W. ADVANCE FROM RELIEF FUND. Mr Lang announced that £1,000,000 would be advanced from the Relief Fund, enabling 10,000 men to be absorbed in public works. PROPOSALS REJECTED. METROPOLITAN LABOUR CONFERENCE. United Press Association—By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, March 18. The Metropolitan Labour Conference rejected every proposal submitted for the relief of unemployment. A recommendation for the Socialisation of all industries was defeated by 61 to 57 votes. The decision is regarded as a vote of confidence in the Lang Government, wherewith the problem is left for the present. COST OF DOLE SYSTEM. MONEY COULD BE BETTER SPENT. United Presa Association—By Electric Telegraph— Copyright SYDNEY, March 18. Addressing local body delegates at Wollongong, the Minister of Education (Mr W. Davies) said the dole system was costing £3,000,000 per annum. The system was responsible for many impositions, whereby the recipients obtained double rations. The money ought to be spent providing work for the unemployed.
