BOXING.
TIMARU ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the General Committee of the Timaru Boxing Association was held last evening. Present—Messrs R. L. Shilitto (chairman), J. O. Bohm, W. W. Best, C. E. Triggs, J. Dineen, J. J. Stewart, R. McGlashan, A. N. Oakey, W. Cuthbertson, T. Segar, R. Taylor, and M. Angland (hon. secretary). A letter was received from the Hawke’s Bay Association, asking for assistance, owing to the loss sustained by the Association in the recent earthquake. The chairman, in commenting on the letter, said the appeal was worthy of support, but the amount lost by the Hawke’s Bay Association was difficult to estimate.
Mr Best suggested that the New Zealand Association be written to asking their advice in the matter, as the Association would then know the amount to donate.
The suggestion made by Mr Best was agreed to. Correspondence was received from Tommy Griffiths and T. Palmer (professionals) , E. Pocock, H. Lister, and W. Ennis (amateurs), seeking matches. The applications were referred to the Match Committee.
The secretary presented a financial statement in connection with the Campbell-Macdonald context. Th,e statement disclosed that the Association had made a substantial profit on the contest.
The chairman, in moving the adoption of the statement, congratulated th* responsible for the success of tire tourney. The financial results were mainly due to thorough organisation and sound management. Mr
Shilitto also complimented the referees, Mr Stewart (professional bout) and Mr Segar (amateur bouts), on the capable manner in which they had carried out their duties. The Association had experienced a very successful season in staging amateur contests, and providing first-class professional contests were offered the public, the prospects for a successful season were exceedingly bright. The motion was seconded by Mr Oakey, who congratulated the Match Committee on the success of their efforts. The speaker contended that with a continuation of the sound management already shown, the financial position of the Association would allow every consideration being given to the staging of first-class amateur and professional contests. The balance-sheet was unanimously adopted. Mr Bohm suggested that the Committee make recognition of the cap-
able manner in which Mr Stewart had carried out his duties at referee. Mr Best, speaking in support of Mr Bohm’s suggestion, said he considered some momento should be given Mr Stewart to mark the first occasion on which he controlled a professional contest. Mr Stewart thanked the Committee for their confidence, but declined to accept any other recognition of his services. After further discussion, it was decided, on the motion of Messrs Best and Dineen, that a sub-committee consisting of Messrs Shilitto, Oakey and Angland decide on some momento being procured for presentation to Mr Stewart. The motion was agreed to without further discussion.
A general discussion then took place on the staging of further contests, the 4natter being finally referred *to the Match Committee for report.
