(Special to the “ Herald.”) CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 7. Conditions were well nigh perfect for the Summer meeting, of the Metropolitan Trotting Club, but the public had not recovered from the shock of the Hawke’s Bay disaster, and the attendance was probably the smallest seen at Addington for a dozen years or more. Naturally the totalisator suffered severely, and the turnover for the day was only fair. The track was in lightning order, and in the Champion Handicap Red Shadow established a new record for a three-year-old. In the Midsummer Handicap the sensational pacer Harold Logan wrecked all previous figures for two miles by stepping 4.13 2-5. From post to post, with a racing start, he covered the eight furlongs in 4.11 2-5. The final event of the day saw twelve-year-old Logan Chief register his first win of the season. A Good Stayer. There was a small pool on the opening trotters’ race, the Spreydon Handicap. Surprise Journey 539 was a short priced favourite, with Fifa 478 and Kyra 287 next in demand. The whole ileld began well except Gemlight, but Scuttle broke on the first bend and Kyra tangled turning into the back. Repute led into the back stretch from Scuttle, Kyra, Eileen Wood and Nelson Boy, but at the mile post Nelson Boy had taken charge from Repute and Nelson Ata. At the stand the order was Nelson Boy, Nelson Ata, Repute, Fifa, Young Carbine, Kyra, and Surprise Journey. The favourite skipped and lost ground on the bend, and Fifa and Kyra broke at the half mile. Going to the far turn Nelson Boy and Nelson Ata were still in charge, but Surprise Journey and Eileen Wood were catching them rapidly. Nelson Ata led Nelson Boy, Surprise Journey and Eileen Wood round the bend, and half-way down the straight Nelson Ata had what looked like a winning lead. Surprise Journey, however, caught him twenty yards from home, but succumbed in turn to Eileen Wood, who won on the post by a neck. Surprise Journey beat Nelson Ata by half a length, with Nelson Boy four lengths further back. Eileen Wood got into some trouble soon after the start, and Surprise Journey put in two skips on the trip. Three-year-old Record. The Champion Three-year-old Handicap, which attracted only three entries, was a very bad race all through for the Club. The totalisator handled only £437 10s, with Arethusa carrying approximately a fiver more than the Red Shadow-Rawhitiroa couplet. It looked as if there might be some trouble at the barrier, but a good start was effected. Rawhitiroa set out to win all the way. Arethusa began well, but stuttered in her gait on the first bend, and she lost what little she had picked up on the leader. When the mile post was reached Rawhitiroa was holding his 36 yards concession from Arethusa, with Red Shadow a dozen yards away, apparently going easily. There was no change in the order at the stand, but Rawhitiroa skipped on the bend and came back a bit. Going down the back his lead had been reduced to about 24 yards, and Red Shadow had moved up behind Arethusa, and appeared to have the favourite’s measure whenever Bryce was ready. Rawhitiroa was beginning to labour two furlongs from home, but he still held his 24 yards lead, and he turned for home at least six lengths ahead of the other pair. Red Shadow was sent along after reaching the straight and soon disposed of Arethusa, but he was attempting to give too big a start to Rawhitiroa, and was eased up over the last few strides to be beaten by a length and a half. Arethusa, who was not driven out, was three lengths further back. Rawhitiroa registered the smart time of 3.20 2-5, and Red Shadow hoisted the remarkable figures for a three-year-old of 3.16 4-5. Had there not been tactics brought into play he would probably have gone faster, and he is unquestionably the speediest pacer of his age so far seen in New Zealand.

Harold Logan Creates Sensation. The successful Donald stable provided the favourites in the Midsummer Handicap with Lindbergh and Dundas Boy. The most favoured of the others were Neeoro and Harold Logan. Vendome, Harvest Child, and King Pointer broke at the start, and Grandlight was slow and lost his place. Avenger was first away from Neeoro and Great Logan, but Neeoro took charge at the end of half a mile and set out to endeavour to win all the way. Leaving the straight the order was Neeoro, Free Advice, Avenger, Great Logan, Regal Voyage, Vesuvius and Grandlight. Travis Axworthy was at this stage travelling best of the back-markers. Neeoro ran to the mile in 2.12 3-5, just clear of Free Advice and Avenger, and as they commenced the final lap the leaders were still Neeoro, Avenger, Great Logan, Free Advice, Regal Voyage, Vesuvius and Grandlight. Harold Logan was on the rails at the tail of the big bunch, and his driver had to let him drop back on the bend

to get clear, and his task then looked a hopeless one. As they swept down the back Regal Voyage flashed up, and Harold Logan commenced a wonderful run. Regal Voyage headed Neeoro at the far turn, where Harold Logan took third place. Regal Voyage led into the straight from Harold Logan, Lindbergh, Neeoro, Free Advice and Grandlight, and stalling off a determined challenge from Lindbergh she won by half a length. Harold Logan’s great effort left him without a finish, and he was beaten into third place, two lengths behind Lindbergh. Grandlight, who did not get a good passage, was three lengths away, with Neeoro fifth. Regal Voyage and Lindbergh both cut lOsec. off their handicaps, hoisting 4.19 4-5 and 4.18 respectively, while Harold Logan put up the amazing figures of 4.13 2-5, cutting ssecs off the previous record held by Peter Bingen at 4.18 1-5. This effort set all doubts at rest as to who is the best pacer in the Dominion An Exciting Finish.

Once more a Donald bracket—Sir Guy and Sunny Bob—dominated the betting, when business commenced on the Papanui Handicap, another bracket, Proud Dillon and Cyone, ranking as second choice. Aleron and Proud Dillon failed t,o begin correctly. The -.lelboume pacer Admiral led out from Hostess, Jolly Pet and Sir Guy, but Hostess soon took charge and led till half a mile had been traversed. Then Jolly Pet ran to the front from Hostess, Admiral, Sir Guy, and Nelson de Oro. The pace slowed up considerably until the back stretch was reached when the back markers compelled the leaders to speed up to hold their places. Jolly Pet led past the mile from Nelson de Oro, and the back-marker Arikitoa, and at the beginning of the final lap this trio were attended by Sir Guy and Hostess. Jolly Pet was still in command at the far turn from Nelson de Oro, Hostess, Sir Guy and Sunny Bob, with a bunch close up. Nelson de Oro supplanted Jolly Pet at the top of the straight, the next lot being Sir Guy, Hostess, Sunny Bob and Admiral. Nelson de Oro tired in the run home, and was headed by Sir Guy. Then Cyone put in a fast run from the ruck to the front, and Wakataua later come from the back. An exciting finish ended in Cyone winning by half a length from Wakataua, who beat Sir Guy by a neck. Nelson de Oro was a head away, narrowly beating Sunny Bob, Hostess, and Admiral. Australian Trotter Wins. Surprise Journey 1334 and Duke Bingen 1066 were the popular selections for the Cashmere Handicap, the two mile trotters’ race. The contest proved a disappointing one, more than half the field breaking badly. Lady Fan and Admiral Bingent went away at a gallop, and New Metford tangled. Lady Fan galloped into the lead, and showed the way past the stand to Master Audo, New Metford, Duke Bingen, Paddy McKinney, Surprise Journey and Tonic. Lady Fan broke at the back and New Metford and Surprise Journey made mistakes, and at the mile post Master Audo took charge from Paddy McKinney, Lady Fan and Duke Bingen. Paddy McKinney went to the front at the beginning of the last round, from Master Audo, Lady Fan and Duke Bingen, the nearest of the others being Surprise Journey who was over a dozen lengths away. The order was the same half a mile from home, but Lady Fan and Master Audo left their feet going down the back, and at the far turn Paddy McKinney was four lengths ahead of Duke Bingen. Paddy McKinney then had matters all his own way, and won easing up by a length and a half from Duke Bingen, who was a dozen lengths ahead of Master Audo. Lady Fan was three lengths further back. The winner is a recent arrival from Melbourne, and his driver, a comparative youth, was given a very flattering reception by the crowd. The stewards, however, were not so kind, as they fined G. Gatt £lO for crossing Master Audo before being the regulation distance in front. Priceless Leads All the Way. Eleven three-year-olds were produced for the Juvenile Handicap, and there was good support for seven of the number, with Herod 1055, Bingen Junior 975, Location 769, and Chenaway 753 topping the list. Royal Parade and Location began badly, and Chenaway broke early. Priceless, Le Fashion and Golden Harvest were first to show, and at the stand the leading division comprised Priceless, Le Fashion, Homeward Bound, Flying Cloud and Herod. Le Fashion challenged Priceless going down the back, but failed to head her, and at the top the leaders were Priceless, Le Fashion, Flying Cloud, with Herod, Chenaway and Location moving up fast. Priceless held her own to the wire and won nicely by a length from Herod, who beat Location by a couple of lengths. Flying Cloud was half a length further back. Location was unlucky, as she met with interference during a scramble. An English Visitor. The English horse Colonial. Boy wound up favourite in the Liverpool Handicap, the "slow” two-mile event, with the Donald pair, Author Franz— Baron Bingen, almost 110 units away. I Gunbourne, Fair Wave, and El Direct ! settled their chances at the start. Author Franz, Colonial Boy, and Kreisler were the early leaders, and at the stand the first time Author Franz, Teremoa, Colonial Boy, Cranleigh, Kreisler and Salient made up the leading bunch. There was not much change when the mile was reached, and Author Franz, Teremoa, Colonial Boy, Cranleigh and Kreisler were still in the van as they raced to the far turn with three furlongs to go. Author Franz and Colonial Boy drew away at the bend, where Teremoa and Cranleigh cried enough, and they led to the straight well in advance of Kreisler and Kelp, who were travelling well. In the run home Colonial Boy disposed of Author Franz and won comfortably by a length from Kelp, who got up to beat Kreisler by half a length. Author Franz was a couple of lengths away, half a dozen lengths ahead of Baron Bingen. The placed horses clipped ten to twelve seconds off their handicap times, and Colonial Boy did it so nicely that it was evident his private reputation was justified. One of the Old Brigade.

In the Craven Handicap backers made their last throw by supporting Free Advice 1362, Great Logan 1186, and the Bonny Logan—Logan Chief combination 1033. Free Advice and Kotuku Jack failed to begin to time, and further disaster eventuated when Dilnon broke and fell, bringing down Talent and capsizing Great Logan. Avonwood made the running from Dilnon, Golden Bubbles, and Delightful. At the end of two furlongs Dilnon fell and disorganised most of the field. When the stand was reached Avonwood, Golden Bubbles and Arikitoa were in the van, with only Logan Chief, Delightful and Bonny Logan near them. Avonwood led down the back from Golden Bubbles, Arikitoa, Logan Chief and Bonny Logan. Avonwood held his own round the bend from Arikitoa, Logan Chief, and Free Advice, but in the straight. was soon headed by Arikitoa and Logan Chief, and a good race between this pair resulted in the veteran winning by half a length. Free Advice was three lengths behind Arikitoa, with Delightful close up fourth, and Golden Bubbles next.
