HAWKE CUP MATCH.
South Canterbury’s Challenge. WAIKATO IN STRONG POSITION. By Telegraph—Press Association HAMILTON, February 6. Though they made an indifferent start, Waikato put up a fair first innings’ showing- against South Canterbury In the challenge match for the Hawke Cup which opened here to-day in perfect weather. The visitors came with the reputation of being a strong bowling side, and the home side were inclined to be over cautious. Badeley, the Waikato skipper, and A. J. Aitken. an exChrist’s College boy, were the only two batsmen to treat the bowling lightly, and even they had difficulty in penetrating the fieldsmen, who gave a sparkling display, especially in the slips. Davies had the best bowling figures, taking two wickets for 15 runs. McBeath and McDougall accounted for the remainder of the wickets, but were hardly inexpensive. Hamilton was handy at fine slip and caught both Lumsden and Senior off fast deliveries from McDougall.
Hawke was 15 up when he pulled one from Mcßeath to short leg, Seaton accepting a very difficult catch. Skeet and Badeley formed a productive partnership, but took few chances. The former hit a brace of twos and a four in succession off McDougall. Waikato had lost 6 for 91 at lunch. Resuming Badeley continued to bat confidently, when Cuthbertson held him behind the wickets. For the eighth wicket he and Aitken had added 63 runs. Going, usually a prolific scorer went for 5, leaving the total at 209.
South Canterbury opened their innings at 3.13 p.m., with Angland and Mason. Going and Badeley, stock bowlers, taking charge of the attack for Waikato. Mason was well held by Hampton behind the wicket with only tw r o runs on the board, and Hamilton was clean bowled by Badeley with his second ball. A minute later Goinglevelled Herdman’s middle stump, only 10 runs being on the board after half an hour's play. Going had bowled six overs and taken two wickets for four runs. Angland narrowly escaped being run out when Lumsden made a quick return to Going. Scoring was very slow and at the tea adjournment the visitors had lost three for 20 after 45 minutes’ play.
Badeley's first ball after the adjoum--1 ment skittled Angland's stumps. Neith- ! er of the batsmen was comfortable facI ing Going or Badeley, the first six overs
after the tea adjournment yielding only one run. Eight out of Going’s twelve overs were maidens. Off Going's thirteenth over, Mcßeath touched a fast moving ball, and Hampton accepted a catch, giving Going three wickets for 4 runs. McDougall followed, but he had scored only 4 when he snicked one from Badeley into the slips, Ewan accepting a hot chance when the total was 53 after 100 minutes’ play. Smith
replaced Badeley. The pair were scoring slowly, but surely, when Knne cut one into the slips off Smith, Ewan taking a splendid catch. 62—7—27. Seaton followed, but Davies, Seaton and Cuthbertson went quickly, the innings closing at 5.30 p.m. for 72. Detailed scores:— WAIKATO. First Innings. ! W. J.
